The post holder will be expected to coordinate the Surgical Assessment unit consisting of 12 trolleys, waiting room and fit to sit area and Surgical Assessment ward consisting of 10 beds. This area is a Direct Access Pathway (DAP) working closely with other DAP areas such asMAU and ED. The area has a quick turn around of surgical patients with varying specialities so experience in flow and capacity would be advantageous to ensure effective running of the unit.

Main duties of the job

The person for this post needs to show effective leadership and communication skills to support the patient and staff who work within a surgical team.

Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.

Quality and safety standards need to be upheld along with the engagement of staff. There will be challenges which need to be dealt with in a calm and effective manner supporting patients, carers and staff. You must have leadership skills and at least two years of band 5 experience preferably within a DAP clinical area. The successful applicant will be responsible for liaising with Workforce and an oversight of HR, complaints and recruitment.

Job responsibilities

  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
  • A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
  • Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited.
  • Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient monitoring equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
  • Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
  • Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
