Medical Same Day Emergency Care (MSDEC) is looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join us at Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced nurse who wants to develop and enhance their skills into a Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse position. As a Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse you will be a solid support for the junior staff and will manage 1:1 feedback sessions and appraisals and sickness reviews. You will work closely with the ward sister, deputy sisters and practice development Nurse to ensure that the unit maintains the highest standard of care provision. This exciting position forms part of the nursing team that cares for medical patients with the aim to getting home on the same day. The unit accepts referrals from the Emergency Department, EMAS, GPs and other wards within the hospital. Planned Care also forms part of the MSDEC family, and you may be required to support this area at times. The main responsibilities will involve co ordinating the shift, liaising with medical disciplines and members of the MDT, supporting junior staff and deputising for the ward manager. You will be caring for patients with a wide variety of medical conditions, and should be confident in identifying and prioritising patients who may need urgent assessment.

Emulate best practice in relation to Safeguarding, ensuring that they maintain and share their knowledge of Mental Capacity Act Assessment, Deprivation of Liberty and Best Interests

Demonstrates an understanding of relevant admission & discharge pathways and the relationship with high quality, safe care

Job responsibilities

As well as clinical, you will have the opportunity to gain knowledge with the managerial side of the unit, investigating datix's, complaints and carrying out audits. As a Deputy Sister/charge nurse you will be a solid support for the junior staff and will manage 1:1 feedback sessions and appraisals. As part of the management team, you will play a vital role in feeding any ideas to the senior management as well as cascading news to the rest of the team. A lead by example approach is essential for this role. You will be joining a well-established area with a dedicated and caring team. Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • Nursing Diploma/Degree
  • Teaching/Assessing Qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development


Knowledge

Essential

  • Previous Medical Ward Experience (2 Years)
  • Identification, assessment and development of patient needs and development of programmes of care
  • Able to deal with communication problems
  • Dealing with distressed people


Desirable

  • Experience with patient flow and capacity


Skills

Essential

  • Able to make judgements based on evidence based practice and translate this for use in the ward environment
  • Leadership/teaching skills
  • Able to communicate sensitive information to patients
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of current nursing issues
  • Extended Clinical skills
  • Organisational skills e.g. prioritising/delegating
  • Hand/eye co-ordination e.g. for preparation of drugs for injections
