Experience of working in a hospital pharmacy, although advantageous, is not essential, as support will be given for training and development. The pharmacy team work one in every six weekends to support our 7-day service.

  • Main duties of the job

    The James Paget Hospital Pharmacy Team is looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated pharmacy technician to join our team and contribute to our growing service.

    To improve the efficiency of the hospital pharmacy dispensary we are increasing the number of accredited checking pharmacy technicians working in the dispensary. You will support the efficient supply of prescribed medicines for patients through your work supporting the dispensary to provide inpatient, outpatient and discharge medicines.

    Job responsibilities

  • To dispense inpatient and outpatient prescriptions, andpresent them for checking.
  • To co-ordinate TTO prescriptions for outside hospitals.
  • To dispense TTO prescriptions, using PODs whenever possible, and present them for checking.
  • To issue prescriptions to patients and, where appropriate, counsel on the use of medications.
  • To check prescriptions and other items, according to departmental policy.
  • To take part in the ward top-up supply system.
  • To have everything checked as in the Departments safe systems of work protocols.
  • To assist with the performance monitoring and assessment of all staff working within the relevant areas.
  • To assist in the training of Pre-Registration Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians and Assistant Technical Officers.
  • To supervise Pharmacy Technicians, Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians, Assistant Technical Officers and Pre-registration Graduates whilst in the Dispensary.
  • To supervise Pharmacy Technicians undertaking the Checking Technicians course.
  • To undertake the final check upon Pre-registrations Pharmacy Technicians and Assistant Technical Officers who have assembled ward boxes.
  • To be responsible for ensuring all paperwork is completed for the supply of unlicensed products, eg: Specials.
  • Liaises with Clinical Trials Pharmacist to:
    • Prepare SOPs for individual clinical trials, to include setting up of Pharmacy trial files. Maintenance of pharmacy documentation to ensure compliance with good clinical practice standards.
    • Be the point of reference for all pharmacy staff on clinical trials procedures, particularly those relating to management of Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs).
    • Destroy and document unwanted clinical trial materials, in accordance with SOPs.
    • Liaise with the Senior Pharmacy Technician (Education and Training) to provide education and training of Pharmacy Staff involved in clinical trials.
  • To prepare products to the standard of The Guide to Good Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Practice 1983 as appropriate, and the departmental procedures laid down.
  • The postholder will be expected to work some Bank Holidays and Weekends.
  • The postholder will be required to comply with all relevant Trust-wide policies.
  • To ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act, Consumer Protection Act and other legal requirements and policies as laid down by the department.
  • All staff are required to respect confidentiality of all matters that they learn as a result of their employment with the NHS, including matters relating to other members of staff, patients and members of the public.

    Education and qualifications

    Essential

    • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
    • Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council
    • Accredited Checking Technician


    Desirable

    • NVQ Assessor
    • Accredited Medicine Management Technician


    Skills and experience

    Essential

    • post-qualification experience within hospital.
    • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
    • Abilty to demonstrate an understanding of hospital pharmacy and it staff skill mix.
