An opportunity has arisen for a Band B Senior Dental Officer to work within the Worcestershire Community Dental Services providing clinical and managerial leadership to dentists. The role will include recruitment, training and development and direct line management.

As part of the Dental Management Team, you will work closely with the Clinical Director and Consultants in Special Care and Paediatrics providing routine examinations to advanced specialist treatments. It is expected that clinical work will be integral to this leadership role.

As a Consultant-led service we provide dentistry to a wide range of patients including those requiring Paediatric and Special Care Dentistry. Several of our clinics are equipped to provide dental treatment with inhalation and/or intravenous sedation and the service also provides dental treatment under general anaesthesia at Kidderminster Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide clinical care to adult and paediatric patients at Tier 2 level
  • To provide a comprehensive dental treatment service for patients who require special care
  • To provide clinical care under sedation when required and undertake further training if required to achieve this
  • To demonstrate professional and clinical leadership in the clinical setting in providing treatment safely and to a high standard
  • To provide clinical care, when required, in clinics across Worcestershire other than their base clinic, and in other settings such as care homes and hospitals
  • To lead and provide exodontia services to paediatric patients under general anaesthetic
  • To take on clinical and managerial projects as required
  • To undertake appraisal of Band A dentists
  • To attend and participate in the Dental Management Team meetings
  • To undertake programmes of research that have been approved by the Clinical Director (CD) and which are relevant to the development of the service
  • To advise the CD on the oral health needs of adults and children with additional needs and how services might be developed to meet those needs
  • To contribute to departmental programmes in clinical governance innovation and service development.

The post holder will line manage and carry out appraisals and PDPs for a number of dental officers as an agreed part of the line management structure.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of conscious sedation (IV and RA)
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience of working within a general anaesthetic setting


Desirable

  • Experience in Intravenous Sedation (IV)
  • Experience of comprehensive care under general anaesthesia
  • Experience of leading clinical governance projects
  • Management experience
  • Experience of service development

Knowledge

Essential

  • Competent in the use of RA sedation

  • Knowledge of working within a CDS
  • Knowledge of mental capacity act and obtaining valid consent
  • Experience of managing dental emergencies


Desirable

  • Competent in IV sedation techniques
  • Training of colleagues
  • Knowledge of SOEL
  • Experience of managing colleagues/ difficult situations
  • Attendance at The Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD) Course or equivalent within the last 3 years


Qualifications

Essential

  • GDC Registration
  • BDS or equivalent
  • Inclusion on the appropriate Performer list


Desirable

  • Portfolio of management of cases with anxiety techniques (behaviour, RA, IV)
  • Additional sedation qualification
  • Additional qualification in Special Care Dentistry and/ or other dental area
