To contribute towards the provision of a high quality Urology Service inconjunction with Clinical Nurse Specialists and the multi-disciplinary team.

As a urology nurse, the post holder will act as a resource to facilitate and coordinate the holistic care and treatment of patients referred to the urology service. The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team of nurses, surgeons, radiologists, radiographers, oncologists and pathologists.

The most important role of the urology nurse is to support, inform, advise, and act as a patient advocate for individuals diagnosed with urological disease and their families under supervision of the Clinical Nursing and Medical team.

The post holder would be expected to undertake further qualifications and training to achieve the competencies required of a trained urology nurse.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for a staff nurse to train as a Urology specialist nurse. You will work within a team of urology nurse specialists in a very busy Trust wide service.

The role would be suitable for an experienced registered nurse who has experience of working with patients undergoing surgery or cancer care and who require sensitive support.

This is a developmental role, with a view to gaining competencies and clinical responsibilities. A willingness to undertake and attain the relevant courses and skills is required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Exercise evidence based nursing intervention with clinical support andsupervision from the Nurse Manager and team pertaining to patients withurological disease or bladder dysfunction.

Undertake training to clinically assess patients and perform interventionalprocedures as necessary, specifically, male and female catheterisation, andteaching of self-catheterisation, support the urodynamic clinic, intravesicaltreatments, and post-operative support for patient with urological stomas.Participate in urology nurse led clinics under the supervision of theconsultant and nurse specialist until proficient.

Be responsible for the assessment of care needs, development,implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in consultation withthe Specialist Nursing team.

Demonstrate empathy and offer information and support for patients atdiagnosis and throughout their journey.

Be actively involved in formal/informal educational programmes to qualified nursing staff and students.

Actively participate in the promotion of health education and prevention ofillness Linking in with the multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic careFollow department, Trust policy, and contribute to the development ofnursing policy.

Communicate effectively with external and internal agencies.Demonstrate commitment to IWL principles and flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service and staff.

Tackle discrimination and harassment, and promote equality and diversity in the workplace. Reduce sickness absence work place accidents and promote zero tolerance on violence against staff.

Take responsibility for personal development and education and thedevelopment of a Personal Development Plan.

Following a period of supervised practice manage own caseload and workat practitioner level. Participate in nursing research and audit.
