We are looking for a Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to be the Lead Clinician for Stammering in the Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service in Brighton and Hove.

This is a permanent post, currently 3.5 days per week, however, we are open to discussion regarding increasing or reducing the number of sessions to suit a candidate's needs. This role would suit an experienced Band 6 SLT looking for the next step in their career or an SLT currently working in a highly specialist role.

Evidence of a interest in Stammering as a clinical specialty and experience of working with children and young people who stammer , including teenagers is essential.

As a Clinical Lead in the service you will delivering clinical supervision to junior colleagues, providing specialist second opinions and working with the Clinical Service Manager, Clinical Lead SLT and the Professional Lead for Children's SLT to develop the service we provide.

All clinical staff are provided with a laptop, mobile phone and have access to an iPad for clinical work. We are supported by a skilled and experienced Admin Team.

There may be funds available for relocation costs for a successful candidate moving across the country.

Main duties of the job

To assess, treat and manage own highly specialist caseload of children and young people who stammer.

To provide clinical leadership, supervision and appraisal to other speech and language therapists, assistants and students.

To work with the professional lead to ensure staff are clinically competent, services are clinically effective and safe, and an excellent patient experience is delivered.

To provide specialist clinical advice regarding complex patients.

To develop key partnerships, through effective communication and networking with other disciplines and by working across professional boundaries.

To undertake regular reviews of the performance data relating to your clinical area to enable accurate reporting of waiting times for assessment & therapy and an understanding of service demand

To plan and develop training for SLTs and other professionals in specialist clinical area.

To contribute to service developments and clinical effectiveness projects, undertaking research and audit projects as appropriate in clinical area.

Job responsibilities

To retain own clinical competency to practice at a highly specialist level

To use advanced knowledge, skills and expertise to facilitate and drive future service development.

To work with Professional Leads to ensure delivery of evidenced based clinical practice.

To facilitate and contribute to the delivery of a robust clinical supervision structure in line with Trust policy.

To ensure all staff work to appropriate competency frameworks and work with the locality clinical service manager to manage performance of staff through the appraisal and supervision process.

To manage own caseload of complex cases within defined clinical area.

To assist in the recruitment process, including shortlisting and interviewing candidates against agreed criteria

To provide training and mentoring to less experienced staff within clinical specialism

To provide high level clinical expertise and decision making regarding patient care.

To support Band 6 and Band 5 clinicians with complex case management, caseload management, prioritisation skills and delegation skills.

To work alongside other leads to oversee and support clinical workloads, integrating skill sharing initiatives.

To enable and support undergraduate speech & language therapy student placements within the relevant clinical areas of work and support the band 6 staff supervising the students.

To provide performance information to service managers to support the delivery of KPIs, management of demand and capacity and to inform future workforce, skill mix requirements and service development.

To organise and deliver in service training to clinical staff and to the wider MDT as appropriate.

To be responsible for ensuring effective induction for all staff and relevant students within the area of responsibility

To take a delegated lead in the recruitment of clinical staff.

Person Specification

Registration and Qualifications


  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Qualification/MRCL
  • HCPC Registration


  • Membership of RCSLT



  • Car owner/driver or suitable alternative



  • Experience of independently managing a clinical caseload
  • Experience of working in partnership with parents, teachers and other carers/support workers
  • Experience of working within the relevant specialist area and providing/developing specialist packages of care
  • Experience of inter-agency planning, consultation and working
  • Experience of a range of clinical management and prioritisation systems
  • Excellent Communication skills


  • Experience of providing student placements
  • Experience of delivering Palin PCI.

Skills and Knowledge


  • Demonstrably excellent communication skills oral and written
  • Competent IT skills including remote working
  • Well established knowledge of assessment tools relevant to client group
  • Well established knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions relevant to client group
