We are delighted to recruit to a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist post to join the multi-professional team in the Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology & Rare Diseases (CIPPRD) & Centre for Personalised Medicine for Rett Syndrome (CPMRS). You will provide a highly specialist clinical psychology service for children and families in the team.

We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated clinical psychologist who is committed to providing and maintaining high quality and standard of psychological care for children and young people with multiple neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions, major mental illness, and rare disease conditions which can be degenerative and life-limiting.

The service provide expert consultation with services nationally on whole-person medicine and integrated mental and physical health and psychological care. We look for clinical psychology skills and commitment working within a bio-psychosocial model for the patient groups. The team has excellent links with other national paediatric specialties, brain injury and third sector organisations where advanced clinical psychology input forms the core of whole-person medicine. We are well-regarded by services and service-users across the UK.

Main duties of the job

The highly specialist clinical psychologist will provide specialist clinical psychology input in multidisciplinary evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment care planning via our established clinics within the team and jointly with other national specialties for children with rare diseases and brain injury.

We are an outpatient based national specialist service and you will provide advice and guidance to colleagues and organisations / agencies (including residential and inpatient settings) to ensure integrated delivery of services to optimise support and interventions for holistic care of our children and young people. Central also to this role is clinical psychology intervention and guidance in multidisciplinary working across specialties and agencies as appropriate and as needed to better support patients with their medication needs, and wrap-around care within an advanced clinical psychology formulation to assist with improvement, rehabilitation, and quality of life.

The post holder will act as care-coordinator and keyworker, taking responsibility for initiating planning and reviewing care plans, CPA co-ordination and meetings, and ensuring holistic care for children and their families. The post holder will contribute to the effective working of the team or service and to a psychologically informed framework for the service, and provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate.

The Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology and Rare Diseases (CIPPRD) is a National Specialist Service which accepts referrals of children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years. This service provides highly specialist assessment for diagnosis clarification and formulation, pharmacological and psychological treatment for children with a variety of complex neuropsychiatric disorders, major mental illness, and rare disease conditions, including neuroinflammatory, metabolic, genetic or neurodegenerative disorders and acquired brain injury psychotropic-induced side-effects and neuropsychiatric aspects in children with terminal illness. Intervention is based on a bio-psycho-social approach, with focus on the psychopharmacological and cognitive behavioural models, as well as using innovative technologies to guide treatment.

The team have recently set up the worlds first Centre for Personalised Medicine for Rett Syndrome (CPMRS), a new service that provides neuropsychiatric services for Rett Syndrome patients across the life span. The CPMRS focusses on providing holistic specialist care, conducting clinical trials, and developing digital health strategies to monitor and manage patients, whilst conducting research.

• To provide a highly specialist psychology service within a bio-psycho-social model including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
• To provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate, functioning as a lead specialist in children with children and young people with complex presentation in the context of multiple neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders including psychosis and emotional behavioural and autonomic dysregulation, and medical conditions and rare diseases
• To act as a care co-ordinator and keyworker, taking responsibility for initiating planning and reviewing care plans, CPA co-ordination and meetings, and ensuring holistic care for children and their families.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent that has been accepted by the HCPC for professional registration. (A/I).
• Additional training in a specialised area of psychological practice through formal post-qualification training (PG Diploma or equivalent) (e.g. in CBT and its modification for the client group), OR a combination of short courses, or an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice
• Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC. (A/I)

Experience

Essential

• Evidence of having worked as a clinical specialist under supervision in the areas of complex neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric conditions and rare diseases. (A/I)
• Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature such as complex trauma, significant emotional behavioural dysregulation, psychotic experiences, and quality of life and survival in rare disease context (A/I)

Understanding and Knowledge

Essential

• Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological assessments and interventions for complex neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric conditions and rare diseases. (A/I)
• Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatment for the client groups in CIPPRD. (A/I)
• Advanced knowledge of psychological assessment and clinical psychometrics (A/I)
• Doctoral level knowledge of psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis. (A/I)
