The Older Adult Mental Health Directorate is looking for an arts therapist to play a key role in the development of arts therapy provision within the older adult psychology service. We are seeking applications for 0.5 wte (5 sessions per week) Arts Therapies post. This post is funded on a fixed term basis by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) until the end of March 2025. The applicant will need to demonstrate an interest in older adult issues and hold current HCPC registration in an arts therapy modality (Art Psychotherapist, Art Therapist, Dramatherapist, and/or Music Therapist)
The older adult clinical psychology service provides a range of evidenced based psychological therapies within the geographical area of Gwent, South Wales. The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) serves the population of Gwent, South Wales and is located between Cardiff and Bristol. Many of our facilities are located close to the M4 corridor, yet areas of outstanding beauty and tranquillity are within easy reach. There are five boroughs, each with its own CMHT provision and comprising of secondary mental health services, memory assessment, and liaison/inpatient support practitioners.
The posts are fixed term until end of March 2025 and the post holder will be expected to travel to other hospital sites. Clinical supervision will be provided. Peer support via the wider psychology, counselling and arts therapies network is also available.
Main duties of the job
ABUHB have a long-standing commitment to arts therapies and recent funding allows us to provide further investment in this valuable service. The existing service consists of three 0.5 wte Band 7 arts therapists. Funding for this post will extend provision to cover the whole of Gwent.
Service users present with a variety of diagnostic labels (both dementia and functional mental health) and typically present with complex/long-standing physical, social and psychological needs. Arts therapies provision is currently integrated within existing psychological therapies provision and designed to focus on four key domains:
Assessment and intervention is based on a holistic person-centred approach, which values the individual and seeks to engage staff/carers in creating supportive environments and implement a multi-component framework for the delivery of evidence-based support.

- Supporting the development of person-centred care environments through reflective practice, supervision and collaboration on service design

The post holder
- Will be expected to provide a service which will improve and maintain the emotional health of older adults, through a combination of highly specialist assessment, formulation of treatment programmes, clinical interventions and teaching.
- Will work in collaboration with professional colleagues and voluntary agencies, to provide a specialist service for older adults.
- Will contribute to the future development and planning of an arts therapies service which reflects the strategic planning of psychological services within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
- Will provide advice, training and consultation pertaining to arts therapies to staff from other disciplines, carers or statutory bodies as required.
- Will manage autonomously a complex case-load using person-centred and evidence-based principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
- Will be responsible as required by line manager for organising the placement and supervision (clinical and/or non-clinical) of arts therapies students on placement within the service.
- Will maintain HCPC registration as a condition of initial and continued employment.
