The post holder will lead and be responsible for the Adult Mental Health ward Beechwood, Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PIC) which is a 9-bedded inpatient unit based inSt Cadocs Hospital, Caerleon

The post holder is a key member of the Directorate team, working closely within a multi-disciplinary team within inpatient settings and the Directorate management team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will ensure the comprehensive provision of a cost effective, accessible, appropriate and responsive mental health service to service users with complex mental health needs within the inpatient unit. They will support the Senior Nurse, Local Authority and Health Board personnel with the implementation of the National Service Frameworks, Mental Health Strategy especially the Recovery and Rehabilitation strategy and develop policies and protocols to support the associated principles and values.

The post holder will carry the continuing responsibility for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care needs and quality assurance. The In-patient Manager will develop and coordinate a multi-professional approach providing evidence based mental health care to all those who use the service. They will ensure that this collaboration harnesses an integrative profession approach so that medical, psychological, social and activities for daily life skills are developed or maintained as far as possible within a holistic care model to individuals who require the service's support.

The post holder will ensure service delivery is of a high professional standard that is in line with Health Board policies and procedures.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will demonstrate a wide range of interpersonal and communication skills including tact, negotiation, sensitivity and empathy.

Understand, interpret and communicate highly complex information to a wide audience. Handle sensitive information where individual patient information is involved. Be able to clearly communicate on occasions where there is a hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmosphere. Overcome barriers to understanding issues related to healthcare associated infection. Investigate and answer complaints. Represents ABUHB on national groups where required. Be required to communicate using a variety of methods, including written and verbal reports.

Establish and maintain effective care through the holistic and comprehensive assessment of service users needs, planning, implementation and review in accordance with Care and Treatment Planning (CTP) policy and procedures.

To maintain awareness of current Mental Health developments and related legal frameworks. To work within the policies, procedures and guidelines set out by the Health Board and professional bodies. Operate within the guidelines set by the National Service Framework (NSF), Clinical Governance, Risk Management, NICE guidelines and NCISH.

Working collaboratively with Partnership Organisations to complete comprehensive risk assessment and risk management plans in accordance with Health Board policy and guidance. This will involve providing and communicating highly complex and sensitive information in relation to individuals who are

a high risk of self-harm and suicide and potentially harmful to others, covering a spectrum of patients with co-morbid, complex and special needs.

The Control and Restraint of patients using the approved techniques and understanding its use within each clinical setting. Ensuring that any training is kept up-to-date in relation to Control and Restraint within the team, accurately recording and analysing its use.
