Main duties of the job

• To provide advanced assessment and treatment for inpatients and outpatients with complex needs, and to provide experienced advice, guidance and information to patients, health and social care professionals, carers, relatives and other non-professionals.
• To maintain accurate associated records, as an autonomous practitioner
• To be an integral member of the team assuming delegated responsibilities for supervision of students, junior and assistant members of staff, and other members of the MDT.
• Supervise and teach recently qualified physiotherapists/therapy assistants/students, and members of the MDT.
• To participate in evidence based projects and assists in implementing changes within designated team/area and setting and monitoring standards of practice.
• To support a 7-day service model including working at weekends, bank holidays and on-call duties.
• To work on any trust site on an occasional basis as required
• To deputise for the team leader for the Respiratory Medicine physiotherapy service as required.

Job responsibilities

Clincical:

To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of own work.

To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with diverse or complex presentations/multiple pathologies, using clinical reasoning skills and knowledge of evidence-based practice to determine the appropriate care plan by utilising a wide range of treatment skills.

To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses in a wide range of conditions including those with a complex presentation, with occasional guidance from specialist physiotherapists.

To formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive treatment and discharge plans, based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment skills.

To evaluate patient progress, reassess and modify the treatment programme as required.

To assess a patients capacity to understand and to gain valid, informed consent for treatment. To work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent or refuse treatment.

To co-ordinate intervention which may include other disciplines advise and educate patient/carers/relatives/other health professionals.

To maintain accurate written and electronic records using POMR system, in line with Professional Standards. To provide comprehensive progress and discharge reports.

To manage clinical risk within own caseload at all times.

To participate in on-call and emergency duties as lone practitioner within the hospital site.

When working on the on-call and emergency duties rota, provide advice to medical and nursing staff, and other members of the MDT regarding patients cardiorespiratory functions.

To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions including manual therapy techniques and therapeutic handling.

To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients

To be able to manage potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner.

To represent physiotherapy and / or individual patients at multi-disciplinary team meetings, to ensure delivery of co-ordinated care. This will include discussion of patient care / discharge planning.

To be able to motivate and persuade others through effective communication skills, with the benefit of verbal and non-verbal skills, using written and electronic information where needed.

To demonstrate the ability to communicate complex and sensitive information to patient, carers and other staff, where there may be barriers to communication e.g. non-English speakers, those with communication disorders, impaired sight or hearing.

To maintain close links, communication and liaison between all staff and people involved in patient care.

Management:
1. To be responsible for competent use and maintenance reporting of all equipment used including but not limited to gym equipment, hoists, Bird ventilators, cough assists, saturation monitors and patient appliances, and to ensure that junior staff/students and assistants attain competency prior to use.

2. To assist in the supervision, teaching and appraisal of junior staff and assistants on a daily basis.

3. To be responsible for the operational management in the absence of senior staff or as required.

4. To flexibly plan and organise own time, patient caseload, meetings, training and adjusting plans as required according to staffing levels.

5. To be able to respond to unpredictable work patterns and frequent interruptions.

6. To assist in the planning of juniors, students and assistants timetables and deputise for senior staff in organisational duties.

Education

1. To be compliant with the Trusts requirement to complete all statutory and mandatory training within the required timescales.

2. To contribute to the education of multidisciplinary groups, patients, families and carers as appropriate.

1. To participate in the departments ongoing audit and appropriate work-related research/evaluation projects

3. To ensure good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor quality as appropriate

1. To carry out assessments and treatments, with moderate and repeated physical effort on a daily basis.

Essential

• oDiploma / Degree in Physiotherapy

Experience

• oExperience of working in within a field of respiratory inpatients
• oExperience of working with chronic respiratory disease patients
• oBroad range of experience including all core areas (respiratory, orthopaedics/msk, out patients, neurology / rehabilitation)
• oParticipation in on-call rota and weekend working
