Deputy Chief Technician, Aseptic Services Band 6 - Chelsea based
An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, dynamic and self-motivated professional to join our aseptic team at the Chelsea site of the Royal Marsden.
You will be part of a team consisting of Pharmacists, Technicians and Assistants, who are always striving for excellence in all aspects of our work. We are working collaboratively as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team to ensure we always deliver outstanding care to our patients.
Main duties of the job
The Job Description outlines the roles of the Deputy Chief technician, Aseptic Services. You will work closely with the Chief Technician in the day to day running of the Technical Services aseptic suite, providing a quality, GMP compliant service, supplying aseptically prepared medicines including clinical trials, in a timely manner to all service users.

- To provide a safe and effective aseptic service to all service users in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), GMP and QA standards. This will include doses of cytotoxic chemotherapy, clinical trials, gene therapy and other biological agents.
- To co-ordinate the day to day running of the Aseptic service, being responsible for completing all staff rotas.
- To support the scheduling of aseptic work, from order receipt to product release, organising resources in the most efficient way.
- To be responsible for stock management for the Aseptic Unit, ensuring cycle counts are completed, reporting any issues promptly and assisting in their correction.
- To ensure the maintenance of adequate stock levels of all medicinal components and consumables required for the aseptic preparation of medicinal products.
- To ensure the appropriate environmental monitoring is carried out in the unit in order for regulatory requirements to be met, ensuring prompt escalation and appropriate corrective action is taken.
- To ensure that staff comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH
- To write, develop, maintain and assure implementation of policies and standard operating procedures.
- To manage the bought in product work stream in a safe and effective manner. These doses may be bought in from 3rd party suppliers.
Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent.
- BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent Technical Modules or equivalent experience.
Desirable
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- Post qualification course on aseptic preparation and dispensing of medicines/ GMP/QA or similar
- Higher qualifications to A-Level or above
Experience
Essential
- Significant technical services experience in NHS licensed and/or unlicensed unit or equivalent pharmaceutical industry experience.
- Good understanding of aseptic services production role
- Staff supervisory experience as a senior technician
- Experience of working in a hospital pharmacy department
- Experience of aseptically preparing cytotoxic chemotherapy
- Knowledge of chemotherapy and safe handling requirements of cytotoxic drugs

- Experience of managing staff, including sickness, performance, conduct and appraisal process
