The Pre Op Assessment Sister (B7) will have an excellent knowledge of pre- operative assessment and the prehab processes. They are accountable and responsible for the care delivery and management of the Pre Operative Assessment and Surgical admissions for elective surgical patients . The B7, Pre Op Assessment Sister will promote and monitor safe and effective practice, enhance the patient experience, provide effective leadership and management, and contribute to the delivery of the Trust/Divisional objectives.

They must ensure delivery of high quality, responsive, safe, efficient and compassionate care.

The B7 will act as a leader and role model, adopting a flexible approach in a role which encompasses leadership, management, and clinical responsibilities.

They must have excellent communication skills ( verbal , written and telephone)

Demonstrate pride in their work and enthusiasm for quality of care of patients attending the Pre- Operative Assessment Department.

Main duties of the job

They are responsible for professional day to day clinical leadership.

?Produces information leaflets? Simple process mapping? Completes audit of service outcomes, including incident reports. Identifies trends and change of practice when required? Presents case studies at clinical governance? Responds to complaints? Responsible for sickness and absence Human Resources? Provides training within POA? Implements development of team with educational program? Awareness and implementation of latest national guidelines and clinical practice changes? Aspire to Delivering lectures within the Preoperative Association conference

Able to explore a patients past medical history to illicit detailed history , request all pathology, skilled to complete chest auscultation

Interpret abnormal findings and take appropriate action , work in Autonomy

Able to complete medication history and advise on medication changes prior to admission in accordance with UKCPA guidance

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • RGN. 1st Level
  • Current NMC Registration -
  • Degree in nursing or health related topic or willingness to work towards
  • Qualification in Teaching, Assessing and Mentoring
  • Evidence of Masters level academic study or willingness to work towards Masters (in relevant health related subject)


Desirable

  • Management qualification
  • Non-Medical Prescribing
  • Relevant post registration qualification at level 3


Public Sector Language Competency

Essential

  • Be able to speak fluent English to an appropriate standard


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Thorough and up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice particularly within Pre operative Assessment of surgical and orthopaedic patients
  • Significant relevant Pre Op clinical and management experience
  • Effective standard setting, monitoring and feedback
  • Understanding of NMC Code of Practice and requirements of it for practice and behaviour and its application to the management of staff and self
  • Understanding of the principles and application of effective budgetary management
  • Understanding of the principles and application of effective staff and HR management/appraisals
  • Understanding the theory and application of clinical governance


Desirable

  • Undertaken nursing research
  • Experience and knowledge of advanced practice/protocols
