A vacancy exists for an enthusiastic Clinical scientist/Engineer to join Clinical Engineering here in Sheffield, leading on the design, implementation and maintenance of Clinical Engineering's existing quality management system and its future accreditation for regulatory and governance compliance.

Main duties of the job

Working within an ISO 9001 and 13485 quality system, providing expert quality management engineering support in a highly specialised clinical engineering service in delivery of safe and effective patient care and continuous improvement.

About us

The Directorate of Medical Imaging & Medical Physics (MIMP) is the largest Service Directorate within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Medical Physics employs 135 staff (35 scientists and 100 technical staff) providing a variety of scientific and clinical Services to the Trust. The Department of Medical Physics is divided into 6 sections each managed by a Section Head responsible to the Scientific Director. The Clinical Engineering Section includes two distinct functions - Medical Device Management Services (MDMS) and Medical Device Innovation (MDI). The department holds two quality systems certifications ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016. The section is professionally led by a Chartered Engineer/Clinical Scientist, with many of the staff being members of the Register of Clinical Technologists or Professional Engineering Institutions.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Master's Degree in relevant subject area (engineering) or able to prove an equivalent level of knowledge.
  • Registration as a clinical technologist or with the Health Professions Council - or membership of a professional engineering institute.


Desirable

  • Project management


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of facilitating, leading and chairing project teams/technical meetings
  • Experience of Medical Equipment Management Group activity
  • Application of ISO9001 and ISO13485
  • Working experience within a Quality System
  • Experience of using medical equipment database systems
  • Strong project planning skills


Desirable

  • Managerial experience e.g Appraisals, Return to work
  • Training on and experience of good meeting management (e.g. microsystems, LEAN methodologies)
  • Experience of using specialist project management software
  • Working knowledge of MHRA managing medical devices guidance and relevant Healthcare Standards
  • Understanding of equipment management processes within NHS hospitals
  • Experience of Internal and external incident management databases and reporting systems


Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • To be able to interpret and implement regulations and standards within Clinical Engineering
  • Must be a team player and exhibit personal initiative and drive
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of staff groups
  • The ability to work well under pressure and meet targets


Desirable

  • Ability to provide advice to 'non experts' on standards compliance
