If you have a background of respiratory/acute care, can care for acutely ill patients and have excellent leadership skills, this could be the post for you.

Byworth ward is a 20 bedded medical respiratory ward that manages acutely ill respiratory patients with tracheotomies, laryngectomies, patients requiring optiflow, NIV, alongside general medical patients.

We are looking for a motivated and passionate band 5 with post qualification experience as a band 5 nurse or a current band 6.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant would be expected to manage a team of staff members, deal with complaints at ward level and participate in clinical audits.

You will be fully supported whilst learning the skills required to become a confident Deputy Ward Manager. You would also be expected to be the nurse in charge in the absence of the Ward Manager and lead the team. Being a role model is a fundamental aspect of this role and you will be expected to have excellent clinical and communication skills.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Act as a role model and assist in effective staff supervision with clinical practice, working with staff and patients in an advisory, teaching and support capacity and maintaining professional competence, authority and credibility.

Work collaboratively with clinical nursing experts including Heads of Nursing, Clinical Teams, Consultant Nurses, Nurse Specialists and Practice Development Nurses in the development of expert, person centred care.- Develop, motivate and lead a team by using objectives in line with department, sub specialty and corporate goals in conjunction with the ward sister and in their absence.

Provide professional leadership with the ward sister within the department ensuring that all staff use evidence based practise and adhere to the NMC code of professional conduct

Be able to demonstrate a high degree of motivation and innovation.

Communicate effectively with the department nursing team participating and helping to arrange monthly team meetings and ensure robust systems exist so that staff feel informed.

Person Specification



  • NMC Registered Nurse with post qualification experience


  • Mentorship/PSPA qualification
  • Respiratory related studies

Clinical Knowledge + Skills


  • IV Drug Administration


  • Care of tracheostomies and laryngectomies
  • Knowledge and experience of managing patients with chest drains.
  • Knowledge and experience of caring for patients on non-invasive ventilation or optiflow.



  • Experience of leading a team or assisting to lead a team.
  • Demonstrates a passion for caring for patients with respiratory conditions.


  • Vision for developing the hospital environment to improve patient care
  • Experience of managing work rosters.
  • Experience with managing budgets.
