Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD) is the place to be! We have developed an innovative, integrated model of childrens community services and now looking to appoint enthusiastic individuals to join our friendly and dedicated locality and county-wide professional teams.

We are seeking passionate Band 7 Specialist Mental Health Practitioner for a fixed term/secondment opportunity, to support our Mood Emotions and Relationships locality Torbay and South team. Based in either Dartington or Torquay and working across sites. The successful candidate will hold an additional post registration mental health qualification and significant experience working therapeutically with children, young people and their families with a complex to severe mental health presentation. We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with a CBT qualification but we are open to other skills and experience.

The Torbay and South MERS team, is an innovative, multi-disciplinary team offering a number of evidence informed therapies to support the recovery of a range of mental health conditions. Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Mental Health Practitioner, you will evaluate the mental health, emotional well-being, and specific challenges of children and young people. Through interviews, observations, and standardised assessment tools, you develop individualised treatment plan and implement evidence-based treatment interventions.

You will work with the child, family, and other professionals to create a holistic approach. This may involve individual or group therapy, and support to systems and external agencies. You will provide therapeutic techniques to address anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health conditions.

In addition to treatment, the practitioner provides ongoing support and monitoring. They act as a consistent point of contact, reviewing the child's progress and adjusting the treatment plan as needed. Collaboration with other professionals ensures comprehensive care and support for the child.

Specialist Mental Health Practitioners actively participate in multidisciplinary meetings and case conferences. They contribute expertise, discuss complex cases, and contribute to service development. Staying updated with research and developments in child and adolescent mental health is essential for evidence-based practice.

They also contribute to wider service duties such as duty and screening along with supporting junior staff and trainees through supervision and mentoring.

CFHD provides integrated care and treatment for children and young people across physical and mental health. We are working closely with other organisations and providers to ensure we deliver locality and county-wide based integrated access to all of our services.

CFHD works closely with our local universities of Plymouth, Exeter & the Peninsula Medical School where we support students in clinical training placements and in addition support our own staff to undertake post graduate training.

Our integrated care and treatment has been developed and refined in partnership with children, young people and their families/carers.

The post holder will demonstrate courageous and critical thinking and is a caring, compassionate and committed experienced person who, acting within their professional boundaries, will be responsible for the provision of care to the child/young person and their parents/carers.

They will demonstrate safe, competent clinical decision-making and expert care, including assessment, formulation, treatment and evaluation of care in line with NICE guidance and commit to demonstrating critical thinking in the safe clinical decision-making process. They will communicate and work collaboratively with the team to meet the needs of children, young people and their parents/carers, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures, and providing clinical supervision and leadership as required.

The post holder will work as a member of the multi professional team by providing an enhanced clinical role to support children, young people and their parents/carers in receiving high quality specialist treatment and where safe and appropriate to do so, support children, young people and their parents/carers in their own homes, working to identify and proactively prevent further deterioration in their psychological wellbeing by delivering a range of therapeutic interventions.

The post holder will work as part of a multi professional team providing a clinical service that is sensitive to the needs of the population and clinical expertise and advice that is supportive to colleagues. The team members will provide comprehensive assessment and formulation to inform appropriate person centred evidenced based treatment plans.

The post holder will contribute to the development and implementation of effective models of care.

Person Specification



  • Experience of working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers, including using goal-based care and routine outcome measures in practice.
  • Experience of working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team and across agencies
  • Experience of working with children and young peoples mental health needs, families and parents / carers, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems and verbal abuse
  • Experience of undertaking specialist mental health assessment and therapeutic interventions for in the area of childrens mental health, with the ability to work with complex needs and undertake risk assessments
  • Experience of safeguarding children and young people and ensuring the safety of children in partnership with other agencies as appropriate.
  • Experience that evidences an ability to tend to diversity and work in a way that promotes antidiscriminatory practice
  • Experience of initiating, attending and contributing to multi-professional and inter-agency meetings.


  • Experience of providing professional teaching and training for other professionals
  • Experience in providing effective clinical supervision, teaching, training and assessing in clinical practice.



  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree supplemented by specialist training or equivalent experience to Masters level with a relevant core professional training (e.g. Nursing, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, etc)
  • Training in an evidence-based therapeutic approach
  • Current registration with the appropriate professional body


  • Training in supervision and / or leadership skills Evidence of Continuous Professional Development



  • Ability to travel across Devon
