Applications are invited for an enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist with a desire to develop their acute and stroke skills with adults to join the existing dynamic and friendly SLT team at University Hospital, Coventry. You will work within the stroke team for 4 days per week and the acute team for 1 day per week. You will primarily work with patients with communication difficulties with an opportunity to develop dysphagia skills and competencies over time.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have an interest and some experience of working with patients with dysphagia, and be able to work independently with patients with communication difficulties. Support and further training will be given for all aspects of the role to develop your competencies as the role requires. We are proud of our FEES and videofluoroscopy services within the hospital. We have a commitment to CPD and meet regularly.

We have a comprehensive preceptorship programme and you will have opportunities to meet with other newly qualified staff and receive training across AHP's.

There will be the occasional requirement to provide cover at Rugby St Cross hospital which is part of the UHCW pathway.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical
  • To provide a high quality service to patients at UHCW as an integral part of the stroke and acute multi-disciplinary teams. This includes providing detailed written treatment plans with client centred goals.
  • Be professional, legally responsible & accountable for all aspects of own work and activities.
  • Work as an integral part of the stroke multidisciplinary team, contributing to team discussions and influencing decisions about patient care programmes, taking on the role of care co-ordinator where appropriate.
  • Develop and carry out robust treatment and management plans individually or in a group setting, evaluating the outcomes as appropriate.
  • Follow appropriate discharge criteria, discussing and agreeing this with the MDT, and disseminating information to ensure smooth transfer to other services on discharge from UHCW.
  • Provide specialist advice, teaching & training to other members of the stroke MDT regarding the SLT management of patients with communication and swallowing disorders.

  • Professional
  • Work in accordance with RCSLT and HCPC rules of professional conduct and within local care pathways, policies and standards.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication networks with patients, carers, MDT, other workers and agencies across health, social care and the private sector locally and regionally.
  • Promote awareness of the role of Speech and Language Therapy within the hospital.
  • Be responsible for own personal development in order to establish and maintain competence and fitness to practice as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with stroke and other adult patients. To maintain a professional evidence based portfolio, meeting the requirements of the HPC.
  • Contribute to the supervision of Speech and Language Therapy students on practice placement within the Trust, including written assessment.
  • Contribute to the Trusts Divisional and Teams clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda including reporting clinical risks.
