We are looking for a Specialist Respiratory Occupational Therapist to join our friendly and dynamic therapy team at North Devon District Hospital.

The team sits in the wider Therapy team that covers Intensive care, Surgical, Trauma and Orthopaedics including the Orthopaedic Supported discharge team, Gastrology and Medical Rehabilitation.

You would be part of a well-established integrated Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy team that has a forward-thinking approach to Healthcare. The team includes Assistant Practitioners, Therapy Clinical Support Workers, and Apprentices.

Are you:
  • Passionate about providing patient centred care to promote independence and improve the lives of local people
  • An experienced and enthusiastic junior Occupational Therapist that has worked in an acute inpatient setting including Respiratory.
  • Intuitive and capable of delivering high quality and safe Occupational Therapy interventions from a well-developed knowledge and skill base using evidence-based practice.
  • Able to managing own caseload of patients with complex needs and also provide clinical and therapeutic guidance to junior OTs, support workers, apprentices and students.
  • A strong team player who is keen to further develop their own specialist skills and is committed to supporting team members to reach their full potential.
  • An excellent communicator who can remain calm under pressure

    As a Specialist Respiratory Occupational Therapist based at North Devon Hospital you will have the opportunity to
    • Formulate and deliver specialist therapy programmes including discharge planning, functional assessments and treatment, fatigue management techniques energy conservation, planning, pacing and anxiety management.
    • Enhance and extend your assessment, intervention and Clinical decision-making skills
    • Complete Mental Capacity assessments and cognitive assessments to contribute to safe and patient centred discharge planning.
    • Work in an environment that facilities striving for excellence through staff learning and development. Support Junior staff with their development and progression through in-service training, supervision and appraisal.
    • Work as a part of a Multidisciplinary team.

    Patients are referred to the Therapy team through a Consultant led board round. The caseload will include patients with complex needs, including patients that are at the end of life. The team works closely with Discharge Coordinators and our community colleagues to ensure safe and timely patient discharges, with home being the optimal discharge destination. The Therapy team are key at reviewing the most suitable place for a patients ongoing rehabilitation needs.

    The team has a daily patient huddle to prioritise caseloads across the teams to ensure patient flow and support staff well being.

    The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is keen to support staff to develop Clinical skills through regular supervision and internal and external professional development opportunities. There will be opportunities to develop your skills as a Clinical Supervisor with Students, Junior Therapists and Therapy Clinical Support Workers. We'll support you in finding the best way to grow.

    Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday 8:00 - 16:00 and occasional additional weekend working.
