As part of Solent NHS Trust's strategic commitment to increase research activity across the Trust to improve patient outcomes and experience, the post holder will work within the clinical division as a specialist practitioner and be aligned to the research and improvement team. The responsibilities will be to open studies within the clinical service line, support staff to be involved and support the Principal Investigator to set up and run the studies within the service. The post holder will be given training to consent patients into trials, maintain site files and achieve key metrics.

The post-holder will work as a self-directed practitioner, working closely with the Chief / Principal Investigator and other members of the research team to manage the care of patients who participate in clinical trials and other well-designed studies within the Trust.

They will support staff to be involved in trials and to use evidence effectively in practice. They will liaise with study teams and key stakeholders and will act as an ambassador for the Trust. They will contribute to a growing culture of active research and improvement across the Trust, including public and patient involvement and the translation of findings into effective practice and improved outcomes.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Research Nurse is to take responsibility for the identification of clinical trials appropriate for our clinical services, the facilitation of these trials and once open, their ongoing management and care of patients and participants. The post holder will ensure that participant care, treatment, assessment, follow-up and data collection are co-ordinated according to the appropriate research protocols. The post holder will work as part of a Research team alongside Research Nurses and Therapists, Research Management & Governance team members, study teams and other key stakeholders but also closely with clinical departments. The role includes working autonomously, in a variety of settings which could include both NHS Trust, the community or in participants' own home.

The Academy integrates research, quality improvement, clinical effectiveness and patient and public engagement to facilitate and support evidence-based community care across the Southampton, Portsmouth and parts of Hampshire.

As well as working with our clinical teams, a core component of our research is our community research partnership model, in which we work collaboratively with other care organisations to deliver studies. We work with care homes schools, charities and community organisations.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered mental nurse
  • Current professional registration
  • Honours degree or equivalent


Desirable

  • Qualifications relevant to healthcare research


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of recruiting and consent participants
  • Clinical experience/qualification in venepuncture, IV cannulation
  • Experience of facilitating and opening clinical trials
  • Previous experience of co-ordinating clinical research studies
  • Training and supervision experience


Desirable

  • Experience of liaison with staff at all levels in healthcare
  • Previous experience in older persons mental health nursing
