To take the lead for the training and education of nursing staff, of all grades with the support of the senior sister/charge nurses and GI unit leadership team.

To work alongside the GI Unit Lead Nurse, the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and wider team to determine and deliver on service objectives.

To encourage interdisciplinary working and education to meet the needs of acutely unwell patient.

To maintain visibility within the clinical area, role modelling high standards of care, evidence-based practice and effective leadership.

To facilitate the recruitment of nurses through effective processes and the provision of a robust plan of clinical supervision and education tailored to individual needs where appropriate.

To facilitate staff retention by focusing and promoting clinical support, job satisfaction and opportunities for staff personal and professional development

To manage & maintain training records and ensure fairness and transparency of training resource allocation

Job responsibilities

Be actively involved in, arrange and deliver departmental education programmes in line with the South West Endoscopy Training Academy and JETS Workforce strategies

Mentor, support and educate registered staff in the clinical practice setting.

Undertake all mandatory training.

Responsible for delivery of education programmes relating to specialist areas and corporate requirements.

Demonstrate a commitment to research-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active part in the introduction of research-based change to improve patient centred care.

Demonstrate a commitment to research-based practice and clinical excellence.

Understand how adults learn and tailor the learning environment accordingly.

Improving quality and developing practice.

Comply with requirements to register with the NMC and identify own learning needs and ensuring own professional development is maintained by keeping up to date with practice developments.

Contribute to the Clinical Governance and Quality agenda by active participation in service initiatives, health and safety and risk management.

Develop and share own clinical knowledge with other members of the wider clinical team both locally and nationally.

Participate in audits and undertake local research relevant to area of practice.

Engage in clinical supervision to gain an appreciation of its value in clinical practice.

Identify own development needs, aligning these to Trust and departmental service objectives.

Understand and contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/ protocols/ guidelines relevant to the specialist area.

Person Specification

Essential and desirable

Essential

  • Registered Nurse Evidence of education to post graduate diploma level BSc in Nursing or health related subject or working towards Teaching and mentoring training preferred
  • QCF Assessor Award, Mentorship or Teaching qualification. Appropriate clinical qualification/ experience in endoscopy nursing
  • Advanced communications skills training or willingness to undertake.
  • Psychological assessment skills training or willingness to undertake.
  • Minimum 2 years post registration.
  • Currently working in a senior position in Endoscopy for past 2 years.
  • Evidence of progressing and sustaining changes in clinical practice
  • Excellent organisational, line management, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • An ability to perform clinical skills with dexterity
  • To have knowledge and understanding to be able to act as a resource and support the nursing team to provide high quality, evidence-based care. Has relevant knowledge to be able to assist with the co-ordination of staff training to ensure a high professional standard in all aspects of patient care
  • To have relevant knowledge and experience to act as a resource within the Endoscopy unit to provide the nursing team with professional development and education in consultation with the Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and GI Unit Leadership Team
  • Have an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the JETS Workforce and ENDO 1 training
  • To work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Role modelling clinical leadership
  • Team player but able to work autonomously. Excellent communication skills (verbal, non-verbal and written) with sensitive information.


Desirable

  • Physical assessment and history taking, assess patients, plan care, deliver care and evaluate the effectiveness of care given.
  • Ordering diagnostic tests and interpretation of results
  • Skill in critical analysis and ability to act on audit and clinical outcomes data.
  • Completion of Good Clinical Practice Training
  • Further Education and training to master's Level
  • Experience as band 6
