The purpose of the role is twofold, to provide day to day management of the mechanical maintenance team and to carry out the duties of a mechanical craftsperson, as a part of that team (20% office -supervisory / 80% 'on tools').

The role requires the successful candidate to become a proactive and visible representative of the Estates Services department to all stakeholders and customers of the service and ensure quality and continuous improvement in the services provided.

The successful candidate will be required to deputize for the Maintenance Team Manager.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The role can be broken down into three areas of responsibility, namely
  • Provide support to the Maintenance Team Manager (MTM) in the day-to-day Line Management of the mechanical craftspeople team in support of the Estates management team, this will include deputising (on rota basis with the other Chargehands) during periods of absence by the MTM.
  • Champion the mechanical maintenance team as a vocal representative and be the communication link between management and craftspeople.
  • Carry out mechanical reactive planned maintenance tasks as designated by the Maintenance Team Manager.

  • The post holder will provide a Mechanical service to the Estates Services Department and other directorates within the Isle of Wight NHS Trust.

    They will demonstrate total commitment, versatility and flexibility whilst undertaking all tasks and delegated work as instructed by the Estates Services Team.

    To install, maintain, service and repair the full range of estates equipment, plant, and infrastructure, some of which will require training by the manufacturer / specialist and may include pneumatic systems, compressors etc.

    Act in the role of Competent Person and craftsperson in trade related disciplines as per the mechanical craftsperson job description.

    The post holder may be required to act in the role of Authorised Person (AP) subject to training and confirmation.

    Transport parts and equipment as required and use tools and equipment appropriately and in accordance with Trust Policy and Procedure.

    Ensure the environment in which work is being carried out is safe, clean, tidy, and complies with standard infection control precautions.

    Participate in any Permit to Work systems operated by Estate Services.Able to work safely on workshop equipment with relevant training if/as required

    Ensure Health and Safety and COSHH regulations are adhered to at all times.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • A minimum qualification of C& G 214 AT Part 2, Plumbing & Domestic Heating C& G 6189 NVQ Level 2, C& G 2850 at Mechanical Level 2/3 or equivalent
    • Completion of a structured training program in mechanical engineering and able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: Low Pressure Hot Water System, Steam Raising Plant, Pneumatic Systems, Hydraulic Systems
    • Demonstrate practical training and experience preferably by completion of a time served apprenticeship
    • Relevant and recent experience in a mechanical / engineering post.
    • Hold a valid driving licence to drive a 4-wheel car or van with manual gear change.
    • Time management and communication skills with confident ability to manage own workload
