Title - Highly Specialised Speech & Language Therapist - Acute Lead
Job Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist looking for full time hours (permanent). The successful candidate will join our energetic and passionate team and will lead on the management of a large and varied caseload across the adult inpatient wards at Hillingdon Hospital. The post holder will act as the 'Acute Lead', providing support for a band 5 and band 6 SLT working alongside them in the acute team.
Main duties of the job
This role includes regular participation at/leading videofluoroscopy clinic, input to Intensive and High Dependency Care Units and the assessment and management of patients with tracheostomies.
You will offer regular support to junior team members including supervising their dysphagia/NQP/Videofluoroscopy competency training. Previous experience of supervising junior colleagues is desired.
The candidate should be someone with specialist clinical knowledge and skills in the field of complex dysphagia management, including critical care and videofluoroscopy, as well as tracheostomy management. Previous FEES experience would be desirable, but not essential, as this role involves contributing to our exciting project of rolling out our brand new FEES service across the Trust.

Our excellent team currently consists of 8 Speech & Language Therapists and we have achieved Trust-wide recognition for our patient care and teamwork. The team consists of a band 8a Team Lead, 2 x band 5s, 3 x band 6s, and a counterpart band 7 role, the 'Rehab Lead', who provides SLT leadership to the stroke unit and two neuro-rehabilitation wards.
Our wider department consists of our dietetic colleagues and the team is well-supported by a SLT and Dietetics Service Manager, in addition to the Head of Therapies.
Our supportive team provides a monthly CPD programme, monthly supervision sessions and team meetings. We are proud of relationships we have fostered on the acute wards. The candidate would have an expectation to provide regular teaching and training to nurses, medics and the MDT.
As a team we look to continually improve the service we provide this role also offers opportunity for participating and leading on service development projects and outcome measures.

This is a permanent, full time, job share post within the adult Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) Team, providing a service to inpatients within the Trust. The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner providing specialist Speech and Language Therapy services on the adult acute wards, with the expectation that they may be required to provide assistance on the stroke and slow-stream rehabilitation units at the Hillingdon Hospital should the caseload/ staffing levels demand it.
The post holder will be expected to manage their caseload independently, as well as providing second opinions and specialist advice for junior staff. He / she will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure specialist assessment and management plans are in place for their caseload. The post holder will be expected to contribute to collaborative working with patients, carers and colleagues, the voluntary sector and Social Services in regards to the planning and delivery of care.
The post holder will participate in team meetings, working parties and contribute to departmental / team audits. They will deliver training/ education on a regular basis within the hospital setting to other professionals, patients and carers regarding all aspects of swallowing, speech and communication. He/ she will contribute to training and support of junior staff members.
