County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust are looking for a highly motivated, experienced and enthusiastic Specialist Nurse Sonographer to join our friendly Gynaecology Diagnostic and Early Pregnancy/ Emergency Gynaecology clinic teams.
The role is suitable for candidates who hold a Post Graduate Certificate (Masters Level) in Medical Ultrasound (First trimester and Gynaecology). Professional Nursing or Midwifery registration is also required.
There will be a requirement to train other staff to perform scans, so a passion for teaching would be an advantage.
You will need to be able to work independently, demonstrating a high level of competence and will need to have excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job
This post has links with both the Gynaecology Diagnostic service and the Early Pregnancy/ Emergency Gynaecology clinics. Within the Gynaecology Diagnostic service the successful candidate will be required to perform and independently report gynaecology ultrasound examinations. Within the Early Pregnancy/ Emergency Gynaecology clinics you will independently undertake the assessment, examination including ultrasound scans and management of the patient accessing these services.
As a qualified Specialist Nurse Sonographer you will be expected to maintain clinical competencies, providing holistic, high quality women centred care in a range of settings. You will be able communicate highly sensitive information and support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions.

Job responsibilities
To independently perform and report transvaginal and transabdominal ultrasound scans. Communicate the results to the patient and other staff. Make appropriate decisions regarding management/ referrals, working within established quality standards of practice, adhering to Ultrasound Guidelines such as BMUS< RCOG and NICE guidelines for clinical excellence.
Provide Nurse-led clinics including history taking, ultrasound scans, cannulation, venepuncture, speculum examinations and taking swabs.
Perform surgical management of miscarriage under local anaesthetic (MVA) within the outpatient setting. This will be following a period of training and assessment by the Consultants in line with departmental guideline/protocols
Manage patients according to protocols and guidelines. Ensure that protocols and guidelines are evidence-based, fit for purpose and updated in accordance with guidelines produced by NICE and RCOG.
Proactively support and engage with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure an effective, efficient delivery of service in order to maintain departmental standards.
Act as a professional role model and provide facilitative and effective clinical leadership to other team members
To assess, plan/deliver treatment and evaluate outcomes for own caseload in close liaison with senior clinicians, ensuring all patients are fully informed about their investigations and plan of care.
Understand the need for effective communication in the department and involve the Consultant on call when required.
The post holder is required to develop and maintain expert technical knowledge of the equipment used. This is to ensure the correct and safe use of the equipment. They must be able to identify any malfunctions and to act appropriately by reporting them to the unit manager/budget holder.
Ensure that all Trust policies are adhered to in order to promote the safety and wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff.
Actively participate in clinical research and audit and encourage others to do the same.
To be willing and open in the development of new procedures and gynaecology services in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, contributing to the delivery and development of the Gynaecology diagnostic and Early Pregnancy/ Emergency Gynaecology services.
To participate in teaching, education and training (within the service and trust wide)
