This is an exciting opportunity for a psychologist to join our well-established psychology team within Mental Health Services for Older People in Haringey. The role will involve direct clinical work with individuals, carers and families, as well as consultation and network meetings with the care systems around an individual. We work closely with our fantastic colleagues in the Community Mental Health Team for Older People and Haringey Memory Service and are looking for a psychology team member who can enjoys working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary setting.

The post would suit a qualified clinical or counselling psychologist who is keen to develop clinical skills in a range of therapeutic approaches, ideally with an interest in psychodynamic, ACT, MBCT, trauma-focused approaches, family work and groups. We are looking for someone who can work in a versatile and creative way, drawing on a range of models, to offer interventions to help with change for older people who are struggling with complex mental health difficulties. There will also be opportunities to develop leadership skills through quality improvement project work in MHSOP and take on some supervision responsibilities and training, depending on experience.

Main duties of the job

To provide a qualified clinical/counselling psychology service to older people with significant mental health needs and/or dementia in Haringey. This includes
  • The provision of psychological assessment and therapy for individual service users including those with complex mental health conditions, cognitive impairment and co-morbid physical health conditions, their carer's and their families.
  • Consultation, training and support for the wider systems and organisations providing care for our clients including the delivery of staff-centred interventions in residential homes caring for older people with challenging behaviour.
  • Consultation, training and support for MDT colleagues working within MHSOP (currently Community Mental Health Team for Older People, Specialist Dementia Service and Haringey Memory Service) including joint assessments, joint delivery of interventions and input to team meetings

    knowledge, skills, experience

    Essential

    • Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, as accredited by the BPS.
    • Eligibility for Chartered Status with the BPS.
    • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a psychologist
    • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
    • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity
    • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
    • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information
    • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
    • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis
    • Ability to contain, explore and formulate an understanding of high levels of distress both directly with patients and indirectly via supervision of other staff.
    • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary service setting
    • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
    • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate
