Main duties of the job

The Head of Corporate Governance is an influential, senior leadership position within the department and a member of the wider Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of the organisation. An experienced, corporate governance professional, the post-holder is responsible for the performance and direction of the team, working collaboratively with Trust Board members, Governors and leaders at all levels of the Trust.

There are five main areas of the portfolio, which are described in detail in the job description:
  • Our Corporate Governance frameworkContinuously improving our system of governance, ensuring we are always compliant with the law and relevant guidance, maintaining our position as a leader in the field.
  • The Trust Board, its Committees and the Executive TeamSupporting the Chair and Chief Executive in running effective and efficient meetings that deliver results and satisfaction for all.
  • Membership and the Council of GovernorsCultivating an engaged and representative membership that yields a diverse, inclusive, and effective Council of Governors.
  • Legal servicesKeeping everyone safe by facilitating legal advice from our partner solicitors and ensuring effective representation at inquests and with legal claims.
  • Leading the teamBuilding an effective and forward looking team that ensures the Trust's continued success.

  • The post holder will deputise, where appropriate, for the Director of Corporate Governance in their absence.

    NHFT is an integrated primary care and mental health Trust, providing physical, mental health and specialty services in both hospital settings and out in the community. Because we put the person at the centre of all we do, we focus on delivering care that is as easy to access as possible. This means many of our services can be provided at home, work or in schools. We also provide health services to various prisons and detention centres in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

    knowledge and skills


    • Highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and professional knowledge and additional specialist governance and risk management knowledge acquired through training and educated to master's level or equivalent level of experience


    • Specialist training / corporate governance qualification relevant to the role, for example is a member of the Chartered Governance Institute

    • Senior level experience in a corporate governance role and in-depth knowledge of corporate governance in healthcare

    knowledge and skills


    • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications, Adobe software, and corporate governance applications (e.g., Diligent Board)
