An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sister/ Charge Nurses in our paediatric ward.

We are looking for a highly motivated children's nurse to join out dynamic and driven team at the royal national orthopaedic hospital.

We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic, innovative and passionate and ready for a new challenge.

We are a specialist orthopaedic hospital and care for children from 0-17years. Out inpatient ward is a 27 bedded paediatric ward.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a specialist, fast-paced and learning -rich environment.

Main duties of the job

The Sister/ Charge Nurse will be responsible for delivering high quality care to all our paediatric patients ensuring the smooth running of the ward.

They will be expected to work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

They will also be expected to work closely with the ward manager in order to maintain their high standards in their absence.

Your responsibilities will include managing the training and development of both Band 5 and Band 2 health care professionals

Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities
  • Provides direct patient care and supports colleagues with their workloads.
  • Maintains and develops high standards of care for all patients within the unit.
  • Ensures nursing care on the ward is delivered in a holistic manner using an individualised approach.
  • Supports senior management in the development of nursing policies for the ward and trust
  • Serves as a preceptor for new employees, students and staff members
  • Acts as a resource and role model for junior staff
  • Participates and facilitates in the promotion of nursing and patient educations and health promotion
  • To promote an open and friendly working environment.
  • Working as an advocate for the patients and their families
  • To undertake patient assessment and problem identification including goal setting
  • To plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of patient care from admission ro discharge, working in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure care needs of both the patients and carers attending the department are met.
  • Promotes and delivers high standard of care.

Educational Responsibilities:
  • Maintains own professional development through further study
  • Provides clinical teaching within the unit and in the nursing education department as required
  • Promotes the implementation of research findings and disseminates information as appropriate to enhance current trend in nursing
  • Participates/collaborates in the audit, setting and evaluating standards of care.
  • Promotes change and collaborates in the development of innovative practices.
  • Provides support in the orientation and induction of new staff and participates/collaborates in the assessment of staff education needs.
  • Participates in staff appraisals

Management Responsibilities:
  • Works as Nurse in charge, making daily management decisions, supporting the team, dealing with incidents and day to day issues on the ward.
  • Co-ordinates care on a daily basis
  • Responsible for ensuring staffing levels and skill mix of shifts are appropriate
  • Support the ward manager in planning for the future ward needs
  • Promotes effective multi-professional collaboration and practice throughout the unit.
  • Assists the ward manager in the staff recruitment and selection process
  • Report any potential complaints or untoward incidents to the ward manager and participate in the trusts risk management process as appropriate.
  • Assists in the management of budgets and ensures available resources are used efficiently.
  • Assists staff as needed with stress reduction techniques and or direct to appropriate help
  • Maintain patient and staff confidentiality at all times.
  • Be flexible with working hours to facilitate the smooth running of the unit.
  • Support the ward manager in staffs compliance with educational and training requirements

Professional Responsibilities:
  • To practice within the scope of the NMC guidelines and unit policies and procedures
  • To ensure that all documentation are accurate and legal
  • Ensures staff sickness is appropriately documented, support sickness management following policy.
  • Ensure good working relationships with the multi-professional team and to attend multi-professional meetings as appropriate.
  • Act as a professional role model to junior staff.
  • Assist in promoting a friendly working environment
  • Undertake unit projects pertinent to the speciality
  • To comply with mandatory educational and training requirements


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC registered Paediatric nurse
  • Minimum 2 years experience
  • Orthopaedic experience


Desirable

  • Sister/Charge nurse experience
  • HDU experience


Communication and relationship skills

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience working within the multipdisciplinary team
