An exciting opportunity is available for an individual to lead the respiratory physiology research portfolio at Royal Papworth Hospital. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced and motivated individual to support both commercial and academic research activity within the Clinical Research Facility in the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute and the Respiratory Physiology department at Royal Papworth Hospital. You will have responsibility for ensuring the smooth running of commercial research trials through identifying available capacity and training appropriate staff to complete research specific tasks.

You will support respiratory physiologists fulfil their research potential by advising on trial design, trial delivery, data analysis, abstract preparation, presentation of results to national and international meetings and publication preparation and submission. You will have your own research portfolio with the expectation of identifying appropriate grants, preparing submissions, gaining ethics approval and presenting the findings nationally and internationally. In addition there will be line management responsibility of other research physiologists within the department. Previous experience of working in a respiratory physiology department is essential as well as previous research experience.

Main duties of the job

As the Lead Respiratory Research Physiologist your main role will be to deliver on the department's commercial and non-commercial research portfolio. You will support junior staff members in their own research development through training on ethics submissions, preparation of abstracts and manuscripts. You should have a strong research background with evidence of previous presentation of research outputs in presentation form or in peer-revied publications.

You will liaise with department research stakeholders to ensure the service being provided continues to meet their needs. Being able to demonstrate effective communication with individuals outside of your current department would be essential.

On occasions your role will also include the performance and interpretation of basic to more complex assessments of respiratory function, such as challenge testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Post-graduate degree (minimum MSc) in science-related subject
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council or similar statutory/voluntary regulatory body


Desirable

  • Management and/or Leadership qualification
  • Current up to date Good Clinical Practice certificate


Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of assisting and/or leading research services
  • Previous experience of working as a Respiratory Healthcare Science Specialist/Senior Respiratory Physiologist
  • Knowledge of conducting respiratory research through devising research projects, collecting data, analysing results and preparing manuscripts for publication into peer-reviewed journals
  • Previous experience of assisting with developing, reviewing and implementing departmental policies and procedures


Desirable

  • Experience of presenting results of translational research to national and international scientific meetings
  • Line management of junior healthcare scientists
  • Experience in performing and interpreting lung function and CPETs utilising SentrySuite software
