An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and energetic individual to join the busy Microbiology Department at Scunthorpe General Hospital as a specialist biomedical scientist (AfC Band 6 ). The department is part of Path Links which is a well-established networked NHS Pathology Service offering a wide range of diagnostic investigations on tissue, blood, and fluid samples 24/7 across Lincolnshire, North & North East Lincolnshire and two large acute hospital trusts. Path Links are also part of the Midlands East 2 (ME2) NHSEI pathology network and are working with colleagues to develop this exciting new project.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist either Band 6 or band 5 with at least 2 years post-registration experience with a successfully completed IBMS specialist portfolio. Following orientation & familiarisation with our working procedures the post holder will be an integral part of the Microbiology department, responsible for processing, reading, interpreting and reporting on a wide variety of samples using both manual and automated systems in routine and serology & molecular areas of the department. Analysers in use include Iris iSprint urine analysers, Vitek 2, BactAlert blood culture system, BacTAlert rapid TB liquid culture, Roche 5800 PCR analysers, Cepheid Genexpert, Qiagen Qiastat, & Diasorin Liaison XL. A tender for MALDI-TOF is currently in progress and new LIMS tender has just been completed. Further projects are in progress to support the sepsis pathway and to further develop molecular testing. Serology & molecular work, mycology and mycobacteriology are centralised at Scunthorpe. The role will also include managing telephone calls from clinical trust operational staff. Candidates will also be required to take part in a 24/7 shift rota which will include some evenings, nights and weekend & bank holiday working.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences or other recognised qualification.
  • Registration with Health & Care Professions Council.
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent


Occupational Experience

Essential

  • 2 years post registration specialist training leading to the successful completion of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Specialist Portfolio, followed if appropriate by additional in house training in another discipline.
