An exciting opportunity has arisen for cover within Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust as part of the ACORN Service at HMP Whatton. This is a specialist treatment service for individuals with personality difficulties and a history of sexual offending. The service is part of the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Pathway and is jointly delivered by NHS and Prison partners. We would welcome applications from those who are newly qualified or have completed training and are awaiting HCPC registration.

Main duties of the job

The Offender Health directorate in Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides Healthcare to nine prisons and a short term holding facility in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. These services include physical healthcare, mental healthcare, and intellectual disability, neurodevelopmental and substance misuse services. The Directorate also provides specialist treatment to individuals with personality related difficulties at HMP Whatton and HMP North Sea Camp, in addition to 2 Therapeutic Communities at HMP Gartree and HMP Dovegate (joint NHS/ HMPPS), in addition to offering OPD services within Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire (community provision).

Job description

Job responsibilities

The ACORN service is a comprehensive specialist service offering a range of therapeutic interventions on an outreach basis at HMP Whatton to individuals with problematic personality traits which are linked to difficulties with progression or risk. The service offers a suite of therapies including Schema Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitiation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (RO-DBT), and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) within tiered phases. Therapies, including socially creative sessions, psychoeducation and both group and 1:1 therapy are provided with an emphasis upon the importance of relationships and the environmental setting. There is a focus on undertaking suitability assessments for the service within the current role alongside delivery of interventions.

We also work in partnership with other healthcare providers and our criminal justice system partners to improve health, support justice and reduce re-offending behaviour. Person Specification



  • MSc or Doctorate in Clinical or Forensic Psychology.
  • Must be HCPC registered and able to demonstrate eligibility for registered status as a Clinical or Forensic Psychologist.


  • Chartered Clinical or Forensic status.
  • Further relevant post-qualification training.

Work Experience


  • Experience of working effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Minimum two years supervised practice developing expertise in forensic clinical psychology practice and in forensic mental health.
  • Experience of facilitation of ward/MDT based supervision groups and/or reflective spaces


  • Experience of delivering specific group programmes
  • Experience of training and supervision of staff, MDT colleagues, and other psychologists..
  • Experience of clinical audit, service evaluation and research.
  • Experience of providing and evaluating evidence based highly specialist psychological interventions to address complex problems and needs of mentally disordered offenders in a forensic service.

Further Training


  • Advanced knowledge, experience and expertise in at least one specialist area of Clinical /Forensic practice gained through specialist training and supervised practice, e.g. psychotherapy, neuropsychology, risk assessment, and Clinical /Forensic supervision.
  • Advanced knowledge, experience and expertise in forensic mental health services and systems gained through specialist training and supervised practice.


  • Evidence of training in areas relevant to Men's Mental Health forensic service e.g. trauma informed care, CBTp, CBTt, Schema Therapy, EMDR

Aptitudes / Skills


  • Record of clinical effectiveness in a forensic service
  • High level of ability to plan and organise clinical service provision to meet service demands
  • Proven ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Research Skills
  • IT literacy, e.g. experience of SPSS, databases, spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of legal system/MHA.
  • Broad knowledge of models of assessment, management and treatment of mentally disordered offenders in forensic settings.
  • Can demonstrate competence in supervision of junior psychology and/or MDT staff and/or psychology trainees
  • Presentation and teaching skills
  • Groupwork skills


  • Experience of dissemination of research/service evaluation e.g. Publications.
