Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist (8PAs)

We are currently recruiting for a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to work in the Urgent Care Team within Kensington & Chelsea CAMHS (CNWL) based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity at a time of increased funding and innovation in Crisis Services, for an energetic and dedicated Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to work with dynamic and passionate consultant colleagues, MDT clinicians and stakeholders .

There are opportunities for teaching and training of higher trainees, and strong links with Imperial College London to develop research interests.

Main duties of the job

This is a newly funded post due to ongoing expansion of CNWL's crisis pathway. The postholder will provide consultant leadership to the Urgent Care Team (UCT) in Kensington & Chelsea.

This post includes 8 PAs in the Urgent Care Team, which covers Kensington & Chelsea patients as well as out of borough presentations to Chelsea & Westminster Hospital (paediatric) Emergency Department. Within this, there is 1 PA for service development of paediatric liaison services in the hospital in collaboration with paediatric colleagues.

The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is a leading teaching hospital with a well established hospital mental team, many CAMHS trained, who work closely with the UCT to proved a comprehensive service for young people. The hospital is also developing highly innovative crisis interventions through its charitable arm, CW+, providing an exciting opportunity for the post holder.

The base for the UCT is at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital but the clinical work may also be done at 1B Beatrice Place and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. The post holder will provide daily consultant input to support the Urgent Care Team covering Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, as well as support the daytime consultant rota for Kensington & Chelsea CAMHS with other consultants.

They will also contribute to the CAMHS OOH consultant rota for CNWL. The postholder will be expected to liaise with providers and commissioners when referral to Tier 4 is indicated.

Job description

Job responsibilities

General duties
  • To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and maintain accurate, contemporaneous medical notes in line with the Trust record keeping policy
  • To participate in the service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service
  • To attend and participate in the internal CPD activities and maintain up to date CPD activities
  • To attend the monthly consultant meetings and other relevant professional meetings
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12 (2) and AC approval
  • To participate annually in job plan review
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, sharing with other consultant colleagues the medical contribution to management
  • To comply with the Trusts agreed policies and procedures

Clinical and management duties
  • The appointee will take a consultant lead role in the local urgent care team and will co-lead the Kensington & Chelsea Urgent Care Tea with the band 8a team manager.
  • To provide consultation and medical input to the weekly clinical review meeting for UCT
  • To provide psychiatric assessments when required and support the Urgent Care Team with emergency work at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital/Kensington & Chelsea CAMHS and 7 day follops.
  • To support junior doctors in conducting MHA assessments at the hospital and provide MHA assessments if required
  • To provide clinical supervision to psychiatry trainees and speciality doctors contributing to the work of the UCT on a case by case basis as needed
  • To contribute to multiagency meetings for young people presenting at the hospital
  • To contribute to the provider collaborative escalation meetings for young people waiting for psychiatric inpatient beds
  • To contribute to the monthly senior management meetings for the local CAMHS as well as the crisis pathway.
  • To take a lead role, together with the urgent care team lead, in developing joint crisis pathways and protocols with the acute hospital and develop a smooth interface between the outpatient CAMHS teams and the UCT including the tier 3.5 pathway which is being piloted in Westminster and is due to be introduced in Kensington & Chelsea. The tier 3.5 pathway may support the reduction of A & E attendances and/or provide more intensive input in conjunction with core CAMHS.
  • To attend interface meetings with the emergency department and contribute to professional meetings for young people at the hospital, including bed escalation meetings.
  • To provide clinical supervision to psychiatry trainees contributing to the work of the UCT
  • To lead on the development of interface working between UCT and other CAMHS sub-teams as well as ACTS (Adolescent Community Treatment Service)
  • To provide the continuity of consultant input for young people admitted to paediatric and medical wards and, if required, be the responsible clinician (RC)
  • There is a small paediatric liaison provision (1PA) in this post. It is expected that the postholder will use that time to develop and consolidate relationships with Paediatrics and develop a business case for a more comprehensive paediatric liaison service in collaboration with the local acute trust (Imperial College NHS Trust / Chelsea & Westminster Hospital)
  • To participate in case-based discussions with other CAMHS consultants and junior medical colleagues.
  • To offer teaching to colleagues at the acute hospital, CAMHS colleagues and trainees and medical students
  • To facilitate monthly consultation group with the out-of-hours team together with other UCT consultants
  • To become part of the NWL Provider Collaborative Clinical Subgroup, responsible for developing strong clinical pathways for children in crisis.
  • To work together and support the team lead in providing activity reports and contribute to providing presentation of the work to senior management meetings and commissioners. This may include the North West London Provider Collaborative and the CNWL CAMHS Central Care Quality and Performance Management Group (CQPMG)


Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Section 12 MHA Approved
  • Approved Clinician status or willing to apply for approval.
  • GMC Licence to Practice
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register


Desirable

  • MRCPsych (or equivalent)
  • An additional post graduate qualification of relevance to working with children and Adolescents
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date)


Experience, Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Competence in psycho- pharmacology and also non- medication therapeutic approaches.
  • Experience and training in the assessment and management of neurodevelopmental disorders including cases with psychiatric comorbidity, complex presentations and associated high risk
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance/Care Quality
  • Able to participate in Medical Audit and Quality Improvement
  • Experience of teaching and supervision of junior staff and other disciplines
