We are looking for experienced NMC registered midwives who are enthusiastic and passionate about family centred care to join our friendly continuity team who work out of the Chorley Birth Centre.

We proudly offer 4 place of birth options including the Chorley birth centre which is our popular freestanding birth centre situated at Chorley district Hospital.

The team work within a buddy system where they share a caseload, delivering antenatal and postnatal care from the birth centre as a hub, together the team provide a 24hr-rostered cover to the birth centre intrapartum facilities. Some contacts are scheduled to take place in the community setting.

You will uphold the values of the Trust which are fundamental to the care we provide ensuring evidence based practice that strives to improve outcomes.

You will work as an autonomous practitioner to provide and coordinate the highest standard of care and must be comfortable working alongside a maternity support worker on shift during the day and night.

You must be confident in the delivery of midwifery -led care and be able to support less experienced midwives in acquiring these skills.

You will work with the continuity team leader to ensure deliveryof service that is equitable, evidence-based and consistent with therecommendations of all relevant reports and guidelines. You will be required to deputise for the manager in the event of leave or absence.

Main duties of the job

Care is provided by midwives alongside maternity support workers and administrative support.

Supported by the wider team, the Chorley birth centre continuity team:
  • Promote fully informed choice and personalisation.
  • Provide care according to agreed evidence based standards and guidelines.
  • Encourage active labour, using a range of positions for birth supported by hypnotherapy, aromatherapy or immersion in water.
  • Provide training and support to colleagues and run skill drills to ensure up-to-date skills and practice.
  • Are able to recognise deviations from the normal physiological processes of birth and escalate according to agreed guidelines.
  • Take part in case reviews, multi-disciplinary learning and monitor performance and transfer rates through audit ensuring sound clinical decision making.
  • Monitor and continually review performance, effectiveness and user satisfaction.
  • Share learning with other midwifery units,host visits from other midwives wishing to develop birth centre services, and arrange placements for student midwives and midwives wishing to develop their skills
  • Participate in research relating to midwifery units and national audit.

You will also work alongside specialist teams, obstetric and neonatal colleagues to ensure excellent care with compassion.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Valid NMC registration
  • Practice assessor qualification or willingness to work towards.
  • Evidence of continuing education or development for midwives


Desirable

  • degree
  • Ability to perform Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE)


Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Experience of providing women centred care
  • Awareness of changes and challenges within Midwifery practice
  • Able to manage /treat obstetric emergencies in hospital/birth unit and community setting
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Maintains own reflective practice
  • Demonstrates effective listening skills and communication skills
  • Confident in teaching and assessing student midwives, midwives and doctors
  • Ability to implement changes within midwifery practice


Desirable

  • Experience of midwifery case loading
  • Experience of community midwifery
  • Experience of working in a variety of maternity settings/environments
  • Experience of implementing changes in practice and service development
