To support the development of the South of Tyne Clinical Pathology Services, an opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band6) to join a friendly professional team within our Point of Care and Bowel Cancer Screening Department, the post holder will contribute to the provision of the clinical laboratory service, as part of a team of Biomedical Scientists and support workers, which provide a service across the three hospital sites Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside.

The Gateshead site is a new state of the art laboratory with all staff rotating into this area to train on new processes. The purpose of the post is to ensure that the Point of Care and Bowel Cancer Screening Department is able to meet the needs of the service both now and in the future. Staff will be required to rotate across all laboratory sites and participate in the departments shift rota pattern.

Salary offered will be dependent on current position, qualification and previous experience within the NHS.

The post will be on Gateshead Health NHS Trust terms and conditions of employment.

Job responsibilities

As part of the team the post holder will have developed knowledge, experience and competency in diagnostic techniques and must have Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) State Registration. Registration enables the post-holder to work unsupervised as well as a IBMS specialist portfolio. It is a primary role of the post to provide advice to clinical users of the service regarding test requirements and expected turnaround times. The post holder will be expected to further develop knowledge and skills of the specialist diagnostic techniques of the Point of Care department.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Accredited BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent, HCPC Professional Registration
  • Knowledge of specialist point of care procedures to post-graduate diploma level or equivalent acquired through CPD, short courses


Desirable

  • Post Graduate Diploma, Working towards MSc or equivalent


Experience

Essential

  • 3 Years post graduate specialist training.
  • Minimum of 3 yrs experience of modern laboratory techniques and good knowledge of current professional issues.
  • Current Specialist BMS experience within a clinical laboratory or equivalent experience.


Desirable

  • Experience of highly specialised techniques


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of specialist point of care procedures to post-graduate diploma level or equivalent acquired through CPD, short courses


Desirable

  • Knowledge of Clinical Pathology Accreditation Inspections, Quality Management Systems and Audit Statistical Analysis
