To act as a specialist recovery practitioner, supporting patients post operatively covering services such as elective surgery, emergency and maternity.

Is accountable for the provision, organisation and delivery of patient care within the sphere of responsibility and assessed competencies. The post holder will provide and assist with the development of safe patient care post operatively, working across the Bedford NHS Trust Theatres/Maternity and community trust in the laser unit, OMF, MRI, and assist in acute pain management. He/she also provides effective mentorship and supervision, participating in the education and training of nursing staff. To ensure safe, efficient timely individualised care is delivered in line with local and national targets.

Main duties of the job

Key Duties
  • Work as a skilled member of the recovery team, carrying out nursing duties within the recovery area, and providing the highest standard of patient care.
  • Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence based nursing care.
  • Participate in the monitoring and maintenance of standards in accordance with the Clinic policies and procedures, as well as maintain custody and checking of controlled drugs daily.
  • Communicate effectively and responsibly at all times with colleagues within the multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Maintain accurate and legible written and electronic records of care, ensuring that the safety, privacy and dignity of the patient is maintained at all times.

Skills & Experience
  • RGN / ODP qualified practitioner (NMC or HCPC registration)..
  • Understanding of the post-operative needs of patients and customers.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure and flexibly as part of a team.
  • Highly motivated individual who is Punctual, adaptable and continually maintains a professional image.

Job responsibilities

Utilising the specialist Peri-operative care plan the post holder will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient/client within the sphere of responsibility in the recovery department and in all peripheral service delivery areas within Bedford Hospital
  • To maintain safe and effective airway management of patients who arrive to the Recovery department, in conjunction with pain management processes. Ensuring effective and efficient channels of communication are maintained with all disciplines of staff, patients and relatives. Ability to give and receive complex and sensitive information identifying individual needs and dealing with barriers to understanding as appropriate.
  • Competently carry out a wide range of clinical duties according to professional training and departmental protocols, being proficient to work in recovery, across Bedford Hospital NHS Trust
  • In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team participates in the setting, monitoring and evaluation of standards of care.
  • Works effectively as a team member.
  • In line with departmental policies will collect information and maintain patient records accordingly, eg patient care plans, OPERA system.
  • To be competent in procedures required for working independently across the trust with the ability to demonstrate dexterity, accuracy and precision when assisting or carrying out invasive and non-invasive procedures. (eg CVP line insertion and airway management.)
  • Able to assist and support the anaesthetist in the care of ventilated critically ill patients on admission to the recovery unit.
  • Monitor, assess and care for critically ill, ventilated patients during their time in the recovery unit.
  • Safeguards the health, safety and welfare of patients, clients, colleague and visitors. Ensure adherence to all relevant trust policies including Health and safety at work. Fire Infection Control and Manual Handling.
  • Provide support to the management team,
  • Regularly be responsible for the supervision of a team of qualified and non-qualified staff.
  • Support junior colleagues in the delivery of high quality patient care.
  • Is accountable for his/her own clinical practice and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his/her knowledge and professional competencies. Takes responsibility for own professional development and clinical update in conjunction with the Speciality Co-Ordinator utilising the appraisal process.
  • Practice in accordance with HCPC and NMC Codes of Professional Conduct and other appropriate professional guidelines.
  • To work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team maintaining patient dignity and confidentiality at all times.
