The post holder will be required to rotate on a 9 months basis in the following areas:

Enhanced Recovery:

In-patient caseload covering surgical, orthopaedic elective and trauma, patients and to provide a service to the Orthopaedic Bone School.

Medical Specialities:

In-patient caseload covering medical wards.

Admission Avoidance Team:

Working as part of the team focusing on admission avoidance, rapid assessments, and signposting of patients in Accident and Emergency, Frailty Unit and the Acute Medical Unit.

Acute Medicine for Older People:

In-patient caseload covering the Medicine for Older People wards.

Acute Stroke Unit:

Working as a member of the Therapy Team covering 20 bedded unit.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention for allocated patient caseload in relevant clinical setting.

The post holder will provide support and clinical supervision to junior staff e.g. rotational band 5 occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants and OT students on clinical placements.

The post holder will be an active member of the multidisciplinary team and participate in service developments, audits, and service reviews, as well as work collaboratively with other health and social care professionals in facilitating timely and safe discharges/preventing hospital admissions.

The post holder will deputise for Team Leader, in their absence.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention for allocated patient caseload in relevant clinical setting.

The post holder will provide support and clinical supervision to junior staff e.g. rotational band 5 occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants and OT students on clinical placements.

The post holder will be an active member of the multidisciplinary team and participate in service developments, audits, and service reviews, as well as work collaboratively with other health and social care professionals in facilitating timely and safe discharges/preventing hospital admissions.

The post holder will take an active part in continuous professional development and performance development reviews.The post holder will participate in seven day working rota.

The post holder will deputise for Team Leader, in their absence.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma/Degree/Masters in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC registration.


Desirable

  • oMember of RCOT


Skills and abilities

Essential

  • oEvidence of understanding the needs of service-users and their carers, and to explain the role of the OT to them.
  • oKnowledge and understanding of relevant health and social care legislation.
  • oUnderstanding and up to date knowledge of specialist adaptive equipment.
  • oUnderstand the importance of clinical governance.
  • oDemonstrate an understanding of responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act, and of assessing risk within clinical work.


Experience

Essential

  • oSufficient post- graduate OT practice, minimum of six months in a relevant clinical setting.
  • oExperience in using standardized and structured assessments, and in implementing specialised OT treatment approaches.
  • oExperience of assessing for specialist adaptive equipment and minor adaptations, and of evaluating effectiveness and safety.
  • oExperience of goal setting and evaluating the outcomes of OT treatment.
  • oExperience of working as a member of a multi- disciplinary team, and to identify ways to facilitate effective team working.
  • oInvolvement in clinical audit and service improvement.
  • oExperience of contributing to planning care in conjunction with service-users and other disciplines.
  • oGood communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly (verbal and written) and to overcome barriers to communication.
  • oAbility to manage own time and a clinical caseload, and to describe ways of prioritising work.
  • oUnderstanding of issues involved in working in a diverse community, and of practical ways to ensure OT practice is culturally appropriate and accessible.
  • oCompetent computer, word processing and e-mail skills.
  • oUnderstanding of the role of and process of clinical supervision.
  • oAbility to identify professional training needs, and evidence of updating clinical skills.
