We have an opportunity to recruit a Band-7 Clinical Team Lead Occupational Therapist to join our integrated neurorehabilitation therapy team, based at Rakehead Neurorehab Unit. This unit has 17 beds, based at Burnley General Hospital.

As part of the integrated therapy team, you may also be required to support the community neuro team in times of pressure. The job focus will be to work as part of the MDT providing high-quality neurorehabilitation to patients on the IP unit. You will be a HCPC registered OT with sound knowledge and experience of specialist neurological assessment and treatment procedures either ready to progress into the band 7 role, or join as a band 6 while working through specific competencies before moving into the band 7 CTL role.

You will have clinical experience of working with patients with a range of complex physical, cognitive, and psychosocial needs. This post will suit an OT wanting to develop into a clinical leadership role.

Main duties of the job

Within the transition role you will develop your skills to enable you to provide operational management and clinical leadership to the OT team based at Rakehead. You will be required to provide a high level of clinical expertise with highly complex neurological patients. This will include using a range of cognitive assessment and treatment modalities, undertaking complex therapeutic management of patients with both physical and psychosocial problems. You will also be required to chair patient related meetings with families, external healthcare agencies, along with overseeing the discharge planning for the OT service.

The role will require you to operationally manage the day to day running of the OT service and wider MDT in the absence of the other CTLs, this will include the supervision/ appraisal of staff, attendance management, performance management and service developments.Within the transition role you will work alongside your mentor who will support you in developing the key skills needed to move into the band 7 role.

About us

The integrated neuro therapy team provides specialist neurological rehabilitation to adults within the inpatient, community and outpatient setting based at both Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. Our community and outpatient team see patients across the Pennine Lancashire footprint in patients own homes, care homes, day centres and outpatient settings. The role will predominantly be working on inpatient neuro rehabilitation.

The integrated therapy team consists of a whole MDT team including Occupational Therapists, Speech & Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychology, AHP Professor in Neurorehabilitation and Stroke along with Therapy Assistant Practitioners. The team has a strong link with UCLAN as such engagement in the research agenda will be an integral part of this role.

As a Trust we also have a robust training and supervision structure in place to support staff to clinically develop in this specialist field. Both internal and external training opportunities are available to staff as part of your continued development.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Practice

You will be responsible for providing clinical care to a defined caseload of patients that require highly specialised assessment, planning and intervention skills. Undertaking comprehensive assessment at a highly specialist level. This may involve the selection and application of standardised and non-standardised assessment, treatment planning and intervention.

You will undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with highly complex presentations, using investigative and analytical skills. Formulate individualised management and treatment plans, where appropriate, including effective discharge planning and onward referral.

Assess capacity of patients to gain valid informed consent for intervention and work within organisational policy with patients who lack capacity. Formulating goals in partnership with the patient, clearly communicating your clinical reasoning, to justify your recommendations and utilising most appropriate treatment/intervention for the patients needs. The role will also include advising, supporting, and educating patients, carers and other professionals in the self-management of patients condition.

Clinical Leadership

As the CTL OT you will be responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive Safe, Personal & Effective Service, based on evidence-based practice which drives high quality, effectiveness and efficiency. You will oversee the effective case-load management of a complex case-load individually and within team, allocating work to senior and junior staff, alongside supporting staff and students. This will require an overview and re-allocation of work-load on a daily basis due to changing priorities, in order to support delivery of key quality and performance targets.

You shall support the development of a continuous improvement culture through actively adopting the Trusts Practice Improvement methodology,

Team Leadership

The CTL OT manages departmental issues for staff within the designated service area, including workload management, holidays, sickness and performance. Informing the Operational Service Lead about clinical caseloads, referrals, waiting lists and other statistics and information as required.

You will also oversee the supervision of junior staff, including compliance for appraisals and associated personal development plans. You will be responsible for the induction of new starters and ensuring all staff are appropriately supported in their clinical roles.

In collaboration with the Operational and Clinical Service Lead you will be responsible for the management, investigation and resolving of complaints and IR1s in accordance with policy including formulating and implementing action plans in relation to issues raised.

Essential

  • HCPC registered Occupational Therapist
  • Previous experience of working in stroke or neuro rehab
  • Minimum of 2 years experience at band 6 level working in stroke or neuro
  • Evidence of management and/or leadership development
  • Experience of using a range of specialist neurological assessment and treatment modalities
  • Significant post graduate experience, including experience in a relevant specialist role
  • Demonstrate expertise in the management of highly complex patients within specialist clinical area
  • Previous experience of supervising and appraising junior staff
  • Experience of extended training in stroke or neuro
  • Student mentor
  • Experience of service development


Desirable

  • Remain updated with professional practice and new research
  • Completed masters level training
