We are looking to recruit a talented Blood Borne Virus Nurse Specialist to ensure that people with substance misuse problems are supported to engage with community drug and alcohol teams. To be proactive in reducing harm in line with the recovery agenda and advocate for service users in addressing their physical, mental health and social care needs.

Responsible for delivery of BBV interventions service wide across all bases in Surrey to ensure Hepatitis B vaccinations and Hepatitis C testing are provided for people using our service.

Main duties of the job

Suitable for someone who is a professional, dynamic and experienced clinician andhas excellent knowledge and skills of BBV's and particularly Hepatitis B vaccination, Hepatitis C testing - dried blood spot/oral swabs and complex risk management and crisis intervention skills in a fast moving environment, adaptable and can meet the needs of Service User's. The ability to establish strong professional supportive relationships with partners in the ODN and Hep C Trust. To work and act appropriately on own initiative within a multi-disciplinary team and has the skills to utilise knowledge, skills and experience to deliver a high standard of evidence based clinical interventions.

You will have knowledge, skills and experience in Mental/Physical Health and Substance Misuse with an excellent understanding of the recovery agenda. You will be flexible and support the service county wide, reaching in to our clinics in Chertsey, Guildford and Redhill and surrounding area's in satellite venues.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Work service wide in liaison with Team Managers and Service Manager to deliver Hepatitis B vaccinations and Hepatitis C testing in main bases and satellite venues.
  • Lead on BBV interventions for the service, working closely with BBV leads within the 3 teams to deliver KPIs and maintain high quality standards.
  • Work closely with the data team to target areas of need.
  • Manage a small case load and develop strength-based recovery plans with individuals that are comprehensive, person-centred and individualised based on a clear assessment of the individuals needs and circumstances. This may include complex service users including Safeguarding Children/Adult, Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol issues providing 1:1 key working and group work according to the needs of the service.
  • Cover duty sessions across the service as needed.
  • Ability to manage a caseload including diary management, record keeping, care planning and risk assessments.
  • Support student nurses as practice supervisor/assessor.
  • Provide clinical supervision as required.
  • Ability to engage and manage service users with challenging behaviour.
  • Referrals to other services where appropriate and joint working with partnership agencies.
  • To be part of the i-access team and liaise with relevant professionals in delivering appropriate interventions including medical reviews, BBV interventions and community-based recovery support ie SMART / Fellowship and i-access group programme.
  • To provide clinical care for service users with drug and alcohol dependency issues including knowledge of Opiate Substitution Therapy and Alcohol Treatment Pathways in the Community.
  • To provide high quality substance misuse information, advice, support, liaison, treatment and signposting.
  • To work closely with the MDT, service users, 1:1 brief work including assessments / joint assessments, provide advice, information, support and substance misuse interventions and work collaboratively with the team.
  • To ensure clinical records are updated, maintained and completed in line with local operational guidelines and trust policy.
  • To liaise with professionals within a mutli-agency network as appropriate to the Service Users need.
  • To participate in care planning meetings, including contribution, preparation and presentation of reports and information as appropriate.
  • To maintain all records to the expected professional standard and actively ensure good communication within the team and between sessions.
  • To maintain agreed standards of care and report to and advise the Management team if there are any difficulties.
  • To act as a positive role model for colleagues and others through personal and professional conduct and practice.
  • All staff will have a sound awareness of Safeguarding issues and be clear about their respective roles and responsibilities to report, respond to and share information in relation to Safeguarding Adults, Safeguarding Children, Domestic Abuse and Public Protection.
  • All staff will have a working knowledge of and adhere to the Data Protection Act and will not disclose to any person or organisation, any confidential information that comes into their possession in the course of their employment.
  • To fully participate in the Trusts performance review and personal development planning process on an annual basis.
  • Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with line manager as part of the personal development planning process.
  • To achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
  • To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works.
  • To undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager which are commensurate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.

Person Specification

NMC registration


  • Minimum of 2 years experience working in a substance misuse or mental health setting


  • Evidence of continuing professional development in relevant subjects - oPost Grad qualification desirable



  • Nurse Practice supervisor/assessor



  • Excellent knowledge, skills and experience of Blood Borne Viruses, particularly Hepatitis B and C.


  • Experience in working within hepatology service



  • Excellent standard of Physical and Mental Health and Substance Misuse knowledge, skills and experience.


  • Completed Physical health assessment course or equivalent
