An exciting opportunity for a full time, permanent position as Highly Specialist Stroke SLT has become available. You will be responsible for line managing and supporting 2 band 6 colleagues. You will have access to and support from an SLT Assistant Practitioner and will work closely with other team leads to ensure equitable support is provided.

The post holder will be responsible for providing outcome measures, up to date practice and SSNAP data. Ideally, the individual will have sound experience with and be competent in either video-fluoroscopy or FEES and be able to apply highly specialist skills in dysphagia and communication difficulties e.g. aphasia

The individual will maintain and encourage strong links across the ICS, from the acute stroke unit, into the community rehabilitation settings.

Main duties of the job

To be accountable for the delivery of a SLT service to stroke in-patients referred with swallowing and/or communication problems.

To liaise and develop good working relationship with your SLT colleagues in the ICS and promote a streamlined pathway and service delivery

To assess, develop and implement Highly Specialist SLT treatment for Stroke patients in WAHT.

To attend ward rounds, board rounds, family meetings and team meetings on ASU as required.

To provide appropriate specialist intervention and evaluate outcomes.

To provide highly specialist advice to patient, families and co-workers regarding the management and care of patients with complex communication and/or swallowing difficulties following stroke or stroke related illness.

To demonstrate good negotiation skills across a range of issues to maximize functional outcomes for patient in the in-patient setting on ASU.

To ensure that patients are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible.

To negotiate with other professionals including doctors, nursing staff and other allied health professionals around case management in complex cases.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Batchelors or Masters degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Dysphagia qualification to a minimum of RCSLT Level C
  • RCSLT registered
  • HCPC registered


Desirable

  • Instrumental assessment competencies e.g. FEES or Videofluoroscopy


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with adult inpatients, in particular stroke
  • Experience of working as part of an MDT
  • Experience of training/ mentoring/ developing other SLTs
  • experience in involvement of service development/ quality improvement projects
