The Research and Innovation function at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has recently undergone a major transformation and restructure with the aim of growing the research portfolio for the benefit of the people of Leeds and beyond.
Main duties of the job
The Head of Nursing will form part of the senior leadership team in the Research and Innovation function, working alongside the Clinical Director and Operations Director to provide overall leadership for the department. They will provide overall leadership for the Trusts research delivery teams (research nurses, research midwives and clinical trials assistants) across all clinical specialties. The post holder will be responsible for the on-going development and modernisation of the workforce (> 150 individuals), supporting training and development to create a competent and capable workforce that can deliver high quality care for individuals participating in trials across the organisation. The post holder will also oversee the delivery of the Research Academy - a programme designed to provide training and education for staff involved in clinical research delivery.
The successful applicant will need to have significant experience in a senior clinical research nursing, midwife or AHP role, have a customer-focused approach, a high standard of interpersonal skills and an entrepreneurial mindset. They will need to be able to work in a matrix management environment across multiple teams to help deliver the Trusts ambitious targets for Research and Innovation as set out in the 2020-25 strategy.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Research Strategy 2020-25 sets out a vision of how the Trust aims to become the top performer for clinical research delivery in the UK, working with our staff, patients, members of the public and strategic partners to make research an always event. The Head of Nursing: Research and Innovation has responsibility for the leadership and management of research delivery by nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals (AHP) across the Trust. This includes overall line management responsibilities for research delivery staff and the modernisation of the research delivery workforce and research delivery practice.
The postholder will be a member of the R& I Triumvirate team along and work closely with other senior managers within the R& I department to ensure that research is delivered safely and in accordance with national frameworks that govern the delivery of clinical research. The role will include leading on the development of the NIHR Leeds Clinical Research Facility (-CRF) workforce model, the Research Academy and ensuring the Trust meets its performance metrics are met for the Clinical Research Network (CRN).
The post holder will be responsible for decision making where practice or service delivery issues arise within R& I or when cross speciality leadership is required. The post holder will establish and foster effective working relationships with research delivery staff across the organisation to lead improvements in nursing/midwifery/AHP clinical practice standards, research delivery and the achievement of organisational priorities.
The Head of Nursing has responsibility for the delivery of safe, compassionate nursing, midwifery and AHP care related to the Trusts portfolio of research, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements. The post holder is also responsible for appropriate resource education, management and governance oversight, offering associated assurance to other members of the R& I Triumvirate regarding compliance against all appropriate professional, organisational national and regulatory compliance standards.
The Head of Nursing: Research and Innovation will have management responsibility and professional responsibility for approximately 150+WTE research nurse staff and will monitor budgets associated with this workforce as appropriate. The post holder will be responsible for the strategic development and modernisation of the workforce, including appropriate skill mix and creating a competent and capable workforce and developing an appropriate CRF workforce model
The post holder will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of nursing, midwifery and AHP research, education, training and development as described in the Trust Research and Innovation Strategy.
The role will include the requirement to engage with external partners e.g. to collaborate in city-wide and national improvement projects and developing relationships with service users. The post holder will also lead the Trust wide Research Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) agenda.
