This is a newly-created training post within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust offering an exciting opportunity for those interested in taking on a new role within the anaesthetic workforce.

The post will be for a fixed term of 2 years and 3 months during which time the postholder will be supported through their postgraduate training to complete the MSc Anaesthesia Associate programme and become an Anaesthesia Associate (AA).

Entry requirements

There are two entry pathways for this paid, training role:
  • For registered health care practitioners: at least three years' post-qualification work experience in a relevant area and/or an upper second-class honours degree in a health-related subject.
  • For new entrants to health care: a biomedical science or biological science background, an upper second-class degree or above and a demonstrable commitment to health care.

  • The use of qualified Anaesthetic Associates is planned for the future anaesthetic workforce within the Trust.

    You must be enthusiastic and keen to learn and must understand the challenges of working in an advanced role as it is being introduced to the department.

    Strong communication and interpersonal skills will be essential, as will valuing the input of clinicians and theatre team colleagues.

    Main duties of the job

    You will provide anaesthetic services in the pre-, intra- and post-operative setting, assisting with general and regional anaesthesia. Appropriate supervision by a consultant anaesthetist will always be provided.

    You will be accountable for their own professional actions whilst working under the supervision of a consultant anaesthetist.

    The post will involve out of hours working.

    About us

    The Anaesthetics department is based at Torbay Hospital, Torquay in South Devon. The anaesthetic department has an excellent track record and reputation as a place for gaining valuable clinical experience and training.

    It includes 44 consultants and SAS doctors (which includes 11 critical care consultants).

    There are eight Anaesthetic Specialist Registrars on rotation as part of the South West School of Anaesthesia and six core trainees in anaesthesia.

    Job responsibilities

    You will complete this role in a blended learning environment, using clinical sessions in conjunction with their online learning and tutorials to gain the practical skills and knowledge required for successful progression through their Anaesthesia Associate MSc programme.

    This will include, but is not limited to:
    • Learning how to deliver anaesthesia both general and regional techniques - monitor and maintain the condition of patients, and conduct the induction and emergence from anaesthesia under the supervision of a consultant anaesthetist.
    • Learning how to safely and correctly administer drugs for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia, intra-operative fluids and post-operative analgesia under the direct supervision of a consultant anaesthetist
    • Learning how to undertake pre-operative and post-operative patient assessments.

    Service provision is allocated by the administration team to provide a shared cover of weekly duties with already existing team members. Different allocations/lists may require differing levels of supervision.

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • Registered HCP - 3 three years post qualification work experience and/or 2:1 in health related subject or 2:1 in biomedical science


    Desirable

    • Prescribing qualification
    • Postgraduate qualification


    Skills

    Essential

    • Able to travel to various location
    • Able to work out of hours
    • Understands the RCoA AA guidelines and how this impacts on practice
    • Able to work under pressure and in emergency situations


    Desirable

    • Hold a drivers licence
    • Experience in research and critical incident analysis clinical risk management / clinical governance
    • Experience of service improvement and quality initiatives
    • Able to work successfully within multi-disciplinary teams

    • Theatre experience
