Biomedical Scientists (BMSs) contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing and interpreting a range of scientific procedures on biological specimens using highly complex equipment. This post operates throughout Haematology and Blood Transfusion, in conjunction with the Biomedical Support Workers.

Main duties of the job

  • You will undertake general and specialist analysis of samples received in Blood Sciences, on a rotational basis throughout all sections of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. These procedures include the analysis and interpretation of complex results which ultimately leads to the production of a laboratory report, which may impact directly on patient care. You are responsible for informing a Consultant Haematologist of any result that may need immediate clinical action.
  • You are to ensure that clinical results are authorised within defined turnaround times and that you are capable of doing so without direct supervision.

Job responsibilities

  • To work in all sections , completing analytical and maintenance tasks, as required after suitable training and direction.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures in the designated areas, and as a result the development of the Department.
  • Prepare for participation in all aspects of the Out of Hours service rota
  • To induct, train and supervise other staff in laboratory procedures, and you may be required to act as a mentor for new / inexperienced support worker staff

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC Registration
  • IBMS accredited course (eg BSc Biomedical Science) or equivalent approved by the IBMS as suitable for registration
  • Training in basic and specialist laboratory techniques


Desirable

  • Further training courses (eg analyser/subject specific)
  • Evidence of cross-disciplinary training and awareness
  • ECDL
  • Member of the IBMS or related professional bodies
  • Evidence of CPD


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a medical laboratory environment in discipline
  • Ability to carry out a wide range of tasks


Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in a Clinical Laboratory in discipline as lone worker


Knowledge

Essential

  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Well-developed trouble-shooting and problem solving skills
  • Work well under pressure
  • Good keyboard skills
