CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW IN TRANSPLANTATION

Applications are invited for x2 Clinical Research Fellowship posts at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust .

This post is suitable for surgical trainees who have completed core surgical training or are in specialist training. The successful applicant will be expected to carry out supervised research towards a higher degree (PhD or similar). They will have clinical responsibilities and take part in the on-call rotas (at registrar level) covering organ transplantation and retrieval. The post is based at the Oxford Transplant Centre, Churchill Hospital.

The appointment will be on a whole-time basis, but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

Main duties of the job

The Research Fellow will take part in the middle-grade rota to support the on-call transplant service at the Oxford Transplant Centre, Churchill Hospital and the Oxford multi-organ retrieval service. It is likely that the fellow will have exposure to both services during his/her tenure.

About us

The Oxford Transplant Centre comprises a separate building including day-case beds, outpatient clinics, Tissue Typing laboratory and office accommodation in-patients are situated nearby. The unit provides a regional renal transplant service for the six counties surrounding Oxford (population about 3 million), supra-regional pancreas, islet and intestinal transplant services and organ retrieval (as part of the National Organ Retrieval Service). Some 250 deceased and living donor transplants and more than 140 organ retrievals are performed per year, together over 400 vascular access and other procedures. The clinical activities of the Oxford Transplant Centre include the pancreatic islet transplant programme (Director Professor Paul Johnson).

The transplant unit is closely associated with major research programmes in transplantation biology within the Oxford Transplant Centre, The NHSBT Transplantation Laboratory and the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences.

Clinical responsibilities:

Teaching:

Successful candidate would be expected to attend and contribute to departmental teaching & teach medical students attached to the transplant unit.

Teaching of medical students either within the Clinical School or at college level is readily available.

Research:

This post is designed for an individual who has completed Core Training in surgery and wishes to carry out a period of surgical research immediately prior to or during Higher Surgical Training.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in experimental or clinical research, culminating in the award of a higher degree at the University of Oxford. They will join an existing research team of surgical research fellows, scientists, and senior clinical academics. Application for a DPhil at the University of Oxford requires a separate application once the topic of research and supervision arrangements are agreed.
