The University Hospitals Birmingham Facilities Department are looking to appoint a talented, ambitious and dedicated Waste Manger to join our team.

Reporting to the Head of Facilities Contracted Services the Waste Manager will be responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership and specialist knowledge in the field of waste management, ensuring the delivery of a compliant and sector leading Trust waste strategy and waste policy.

The Waste Manager will be a key member of the Facilities management team, demonstrating their ability to work with other clinical and none clinical disciplines and external contractor's and agencies.

The post holder will be required to work with key stakeholders both internally and externally to identify, promote and deliver projects to reduce waste at source and minimise use of resources.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to develop procedures for the correct segregation, handling and disposal of all waste stream including working with site based teams, clinical staff, Facilities housekeeping, Portering and logistics staff and waste producers to explain and ensure correct procedures are followed.

You will need to investigate and promote opportunities to reduce overall cost and environmental impact of waste activities, including better segregation, use of innovative alternative and new technologies for waste disposal, compliant with current legislation.

The role will require the undertaking of audits and survey work, and reporting thereof, to meet statutory or internal requirements for waste management throughout the Trust This to include the annual audits of waste disposal service providers to ensure compliance with the 'duty of care' requirements within the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and audits at a site level site and at ward level to ensure compliance with the Hazardous Waste Regulations and HTM 07-01.

The post holder will be required to ensure that statutory requirements to maintain waste and environmental records for the necessary minimum duration are met. Equally you will be acting as the designated responsible officer and will be required to ensure policies, procedures and guidance in relation to waste management are implemented and managed effectively.

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Educated to Master's Degree level or equivalent professional qualification or experience in a Waste or Environmental Management related subject
  • *Recognised continued professional development.


Experience

Essential

  • *Significant Management experience at a senior level within a large multidisciplinary service organisation.
  • *Experience of managing and developing staff, direct or indirect.
  • *Experience of developing, implementing and interrogating detailed and highly complex information.
  • *Evidence of improving service delivery and customer care.
  • *Experience of effectively developing policies, practices and procedures.
  • *Experience of effectively applying specialist legislation, regulation, policies, practices & procedures.
  • *Evidence of successfully delivering value for money initiatives.
  • *Evidence and experience of delivering training on waste to a wide ranging audience from board level management briefings to staff level 'tool-box talks'.
  • *Significant experience of waste management in a large organisation
  • *Experience of site-wide, multi-department, waste auditing, including policy compliance and compositional analysis
  • *Knowledge of NHS waste guidance (HTM 07-01), UK waste legislation (both hazardous and non-hazardous) and NHS policies and procedures (i.e. Infection Prevention & Control and Health & Safety)
  • *Specialist and up to date knowledge of own area of expertise, including associated legislation and regulation, including Environmental Protection Act, Health and safety at Work Regulations


Desirable

  • *Experience of contract and project management.
  • *Experience of working alongside external bodies such as other NHS Trusts, NHS Purchasing Agencies ,The Environment Agency and other similar national forums and agencies
  • *Experience of managing specialist services.
  • *Experience of effectively managing resources/assets and meeting financial targets for multi stranded services.
  • *Knowledge of Total Quality & Performance Management
  • Knowledge of staff appraisal processes
