An exciting opportunity has arisen for an APP to join our well-established and thriving MSK team. Specialising in the lower limb, the successful candidate will work as part of the MSK triage service with a base in the Physiotherapy Department.

The Banding of this post will be dependent on experience. If new to the role, the successful candidate will start off at a Band 7 level and benefit from an extensive training programme with a view to progress to a Band 8a within two years. Candidates will be expected to complete specific competencies for each clinic.

The MSK triage service is an APP-led service based at Royal Surrey County Hospital. 70% of patients are managed without the need to see an Orthopaedic Consultant. The successful candidate will work closely with the Orthopaedic and Pain Teams and alongside 11 other APPs. They will have a caseload of predominantly complex lower limb/ quadrant consisting of knees, hips and lumbar spine/SIJ.

Main duties of the job

Candidates should have significant relevant experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions of the Lower Limb/ SIJ/ L/sp.

The physiotherapy department has a very strong commitment to clinical governance and CPD. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The post holder must have a desire to learn and impart knowledge, they will regularly teach and mentor departmental physiotherapists in addition to supporting other members of the MDT as relevant.

Job responsibilities

To take a clinical lead role, using expert knowledge and skills, in the assessment and management of complex musculoskeletal (MSK) and orthopedics presentations. Undertake a service coordinator role in the planning and delivery of specialty MSK clinics and relevant interfaces. This post will also have potential to work within FCP clinics as appropriate.

To work as an expert autonomous practitioner in an advanced clinical position. Responsible for triaging musculoskeletal referrals, and for the advanced assessment including referral for appropriate investigations, to accurately diagnose, and then plan further management and treatment of musculoskeletal and orthopaedics conditions.

To provide clinical leadership within the MSK Clinics* providing high standards of evidence based clinical practice. Refer/book for defined operative procedures and required to support the waiting list Support as an expert clinician in their field other Physiotherapists in Physiotherapy Department via tutorials, consultations and advice.

To lead relevant clinic within MSK pathway as lead clinicians without Consultant supervision.

To collaborate with colleagues in the MDT within RSCH to plan, deliver and evaluate all aspects of the patient journey, collaborate with external colleagues to plan shared care.

Interpret National Policies/NICE guidance for relevant specialist area.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC
  • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists
  • Degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy
  • MSc in relevant area or equivalent skills
  • Member of specific interest group


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Completed junior level rotations- including all core areas
  • Expert clinical skills acquired in orthopaedics with significant experience in orthopaedic physiotherapy
  • Advanced skills equivalent to masters level
  • Evidence to support knowledge base in specialist/ advanced area
  • Evidence of post registration education and continuous professional development
  • Previous experience at an APP or clinical specialist level (Band 7) minimum 2 years
  • Computer literate
  • Evidence to support performance monitoring of services
  • Leadership course e.g stepping up course/ LEO or equivalent
  • Clinical supervision of students
  • Supervisory experience
  • Clinical audit/ analysis
  • Teaching and presentation skills


Desirable

  • Previous APP experience at a band 8a level
