Applications are invited for a locum Consultant Neonatologist post (7PAs) at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team in one of the busiest neonatal services in the UK.

The regional Neonatal Service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust is one of the largest in the UK and has a combined capacity of 69 cots (30 intensive care/high dependency). The service is currently provided across two sites, Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital.

The duties of this post will be to provide consultant led clinical duties on the Leeds General Infirmary and St Jamess sites (5 in 12 weeks), alongside the 11 other neonatologists. On call duties are 1:6 weeknights (LGI or SJUH) and 1:6 weekends (cross-site split weekends).

The successful applicant must have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) in neonatal medicine and have MRCPCH or equivalent. Applicants must have, or be within 6 month of achieving a CCT in Paediatrics (neonatal medicine) or equivalent. You should have established skills in Tertiary (level 3) Neonatal care and its related specialties. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and subspecialty interests complementing those of existing consultants are welcomed.

Main duties of the job

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To provide weekday consultant cover and weeknight on call (1 in 6 alternating site) to the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Leeds General Infirmary and the Local Neonatal Unit at St Jamess Hospital.

To provide weekend consultant led care to the two regional neonatal units within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (1 in 6 weekends).

To provide, in conjunction with the existing consultants, supervision of neonatal care on the NICU, postnatal and transitional care wards. This will require working on both neonatal units by rotation.

To assist in delivering the induction and training programme for junior doctors. To contribute to the effective training and clinical supervision of medical staff within the neonatal service.

To liaise with the neonatal outreach team and community paediatric team provide planned discharge and follow up of neonatal graduates.

The Trust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed with commissioners and other stakeholders. This will include:

All consultants are senior members of the Trusts staff and are therefore seen by colleagues as leaders. Consultants are expected to make allowance for this, given that the most powerful leadership influence they exert is the example they set.

It is expected that a consultant will lead on specific areas of priority for their service from time to time, as part of their consultant duties. Candidates requirements and qualifications:

Possess MB BS (or equivalent) MRCPCH or equivalent qualification.

Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.

Eligibility to work in the UK.

Should have completed a recognised training programme in Neonatal Medicine - GRID training or equivalent overseas specialist qualification

Ability to organise the efficient and smooth running of a regional neonatal service.

Ability to organise and prioritise own service workload.

Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Neonatal Medicine.

Ability to offer expert clinical opinion across the spectrum of neonatal medicine.

Ability to support a multidisciplinary team.

Ability to support and develop colleagues and to develop good professional relationships.

Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Must have up-to-date Level 3 Safeguarding.

Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.

Ability to apply research to clinical management and outcome.

Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.

Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Understanding of current issues in the NHS.

Understanding of the structure and importance of regional Neonatal Networks.
