Biomedical Scientists (BMSs) contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing and interpreting a range of scientific procedures on biological specimens using highly complex equipment. This post will cover core and Out of Hours sessions as part of the 24 hour service provided by the laboratory. The post holder will have in depth experience of their discipline and be registered with the Health Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist

The GWH lab is fully accredited to ISO 15189 and blessed with state of the art equipment The Clinisys Enterprise Laboratory Information System is is currently being prepared for 2023 implementation We look forward to using this as we grow with out Network South 4 Partners at Oxford and in Buckinghamshire,

Main duties of the job

To analyse biological fluids to provide clinicians and other healthcare providers information for diagnosis and ongoing health monitoring
  • To communicate test results by telephone, printed report, or electronic report
  • To communicate effectively with colleagues (laboratory and clinical) regarding test procedures or test data
  • To deal with external and internal telephone enquires
  • To provide technical advice to laboratory users
  • To know and understand all Trust policies on data security and information governance
  • To attend Departmental & Directorate meetings, as required
  • To inform the Lab Manager and/or Consultant Chemical Pathologist of any unusual / important results.

Job responsibilities

Quality
  • To participate in the laboratorys quality management procedures, including EQA, IQC, using and maintaining QPulse
  • To participate in the investigation of root causes of process failures and incorrect results
  • To participate in the laboratorys internal audit program

Health & Safety
  • To follow all health and safety policy and instructions provided in the laboratory
  • To ensure all duties are carried out in a safe and controlled manner
  • To be aware of health and safety issues pertinent to laboratory work
  • To use all personal protective equipment, as required by the laboratory health and safety procedures

Communication
  • To communicate test results by telephone, printed report, or electronic report
  • To communicate effectively with colleagues (laboratory and clinical) regarding test procedures or test data
  • To deal with external and internal telephone enquires
  • To provide technical advice to laboratory users
  • To know and understand all Trust policies on data security and information governance
  • To attend Departmental & Directorate meetings, as required
  • To inform the Consultant Haematologist of any unusual / important results.

Skills
  • To be able to make decisions regarding the quality of specimens and validity of test data
  • To be able to follow laboratory procedures and policies
  • To be able to plan and organise the allocated workload effectively, including that of Registrant Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical Support Workers.
  • To be able to safely operate and maintain, after appropriate training, laboratory analytical equipment and instruments
  • To participate in the training and supervision of staff.
  • To participate in the operational management of a work section.
  • To enter laboratory results onto LIMS
  • To directly validate results and authorise reports, according to laboratory policy, of own, Registrant BMS, Trainee BMS, Associate Biomedical Practitioner and Biomedical Support Worker
  • To participate in the development / maintenance of laboratory documentation, including SOPs
  • To assist in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment

Patient Client Care
  • To be aware of and support the goal of providing a quality driven patient centred service.
  • To rectify and or bring to the attention of more senior staff/Laboratory Management any issues compromising this goal.
  • To be courteous and professional when dealing with other health care professionals or patients.

Financial Responsibilities
  • All staff will support their managers to make efficient and effective use of resources. All staff are responsible for identifying any actual or potential deviation from budgets and are to work with the budget holder or manager to find effective ways of handling it.
  • All staff must ensure they use resources in a manner consistent with organisational objectives and policies, ensuring that resources are realistic, justified and of clear benefit to the organisation.

Budget Responsibilities
  • Not applicable this is not a budget-holder post.

Responsibilities for People or Training
  • The post holder will be required to induct, train and supervise other staff in laboratory procedures, and may be required to act as a mentor for new / inexperienced support worker staff.
  • To directly validate results and authorise reports, according to laboratory policy.
  • To be able to plan and organise the allocated workload effectively.

Other Factors
  • Regular VDU usage. Ability to concentrate on complex/ demanding tasks.


Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Training in basic and specialist laboratory techniques


Desirable

  • Further training courses (e.g. analyser/subject specific)
  • Evidence of cross-disciplinary training and awareness
  • Member of the IBMS or related professional bodies


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a medical laboratory environment in discipline
  • Ability to carry out a wide range of tests
  • Has acted autonomously as a Biomedical Scientist


Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in a Clinical Laboratory in discipline as lone worker


Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Good organisational skills
  • Well-developed trouble-shooting and problem solving skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Work well under pressure


Desirable

  • Previous operational management, supervisory and or training experience
