An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Surgical Directorate (Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). We are looking for a Band 6 Clinical Educator for The Surgical Emergency Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital to cover maternity leave as a secondment for 10 months.

Main duties of the job

Practice Development Practitioners will be able to:
  • Act as an exemplary role model for best clinical practice and Trust values
  • Work alongside learners to facilitate their independent learning
  • Work to an agreed job plan to maximise education delivery to support staff and patient safety/experience.
  • Manage their own time to ensure a balance between clinical education and education administrative activities
  • Actively promote and contribute to an inter-professional learning environment
  • Deliver education programmes at a divisional level and where required cross divisionally in support of organisational priorities.
  • Work as part of the local and corporate practice development teams
  • Assist in anticipating and addressing the educational needs of the service
  • Work across boundaries to proactively develop and sustain partnerships
  • Participate in audit, service improvement and research projects relevant to the clinical educator role


About us

In the role of clinical educator you will have the opportunity to educate staff and students in the clinical setting, while also being able to work clinically with the nursing teams in their highly specialised clinical areas. Working in collaboration with the Ward Managers to enhance the improvement of nursing staff, your educational skills and knowledge will be developed by the Surgical Directorate Education Team who will assist with coaching you within this specialised area of professional education. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who has a creative outlook and can patiently teach topics in a variety of different ways to ensure the listener shows interest and understanding. You must be able to research and critically analyse topics to find the best answer along with demonstrating consideration and patience when listening to other people's points of view. It is essential that you enjoy working within a team where by you can contribute and discuss a range of ideas and desired outcomes, while being able to deliver these independently.

It is highly recommended that you meet with Emma Berry (Ward Sister, SEU Triage) or Sarah Sundberg (Surgical Directorate Practice Development Nurse) to discuss these roles prior to being interviewed.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be an experienced, knowledgeable practitioner who provides clinically based practice development and education to the non-medical workforce. They will role model best, evidence-based professional practice. Clinical education support for all learners at the bedside is a substantial part of this role.

The clinical educator will identify and support the learning needs of their clinical area. The clinical educator is key to ensuring the clinical area is a positive learning environment through acting as an expert resource, ensuring local training resources are appropriate and up-to-date, and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team and senior colleagues.

Specific education interventions will be provided and may be co-developed with the senior practice development and education team. They will also assist in coordinating the delivery and evaluation of training. The clinical educator is key to ensuring training is grounded in good practice and will be involved in the education element of clinical governance and quality assurance.

This secondment post is to cover maternity leave for 10 months.

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • oCurrent first level RN registration with NMC
  • oEvidence of understanding and insight into current issues in nursing and the NHS
  • oEvidence of specialist knowledge and competency in the speciality
  • oExperience of participating in projects and audit


Desirable

  • oEducated to diploma/degree level
  • oEvidence of post registration qualification or training in the speciality.
  • oExperience of operational management
  • oCompetent in basic IT skills
