Are you an experienced and passionate Midwife interested in improving outcomes for Families and Neonates at risk of preterm birth? We have an opportunity to develop and build on these qualities in our Preterm team .

The successful candidates will work along side the Consultant leads within the preterm birth team, in providing safe Antenatal and Postnatal care for birthing people and their families identified as having risk factors for having a preterm birth. The role will work collaboratively in providing a service that delivers the safe management of care, providing support for staff to ensure individual needs are met in complex and sensitive situations.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Midwife will work in partnership with service users, the multi-disciplinary team and local stakeholders with a specific focus on protecting the health and wellbeing, and improving outcomes for a specified cohort of families accessing Maternity services. They will work collaboratively with other internal and external stakeholders in primary and secondary care and the third sector to ensure optimal support with the aim of improving outcomes and reducing any identified health inequalities.

Key work will focus upon improving outcomes for a specific cohort of pregnant people. It is anticipated that the post holder will possess the requisite skills and abilities to be the care coordinator for a group of pregnant people with the most complex health needs. The post holder will provide visible leadership and evidence based information and education to service users and their families, and health professionals, in line with Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust policies, the NMC Midwives Rules and Standards, the NMC Code and current public health guidance.

Job responsibilities

The Specialist Midwife will work in partnership with service users, the multi-disciplinary team and local stakeholders with a specific focus on protecting the health and wellbeing, and improving outcomes for a specified cohort of families accessing Maternity services. The post holder will be responsible for providing complex and sensitive information in a range of circumstances where interpersonal and communication skills are essential particularly in high emotive circumstances and they will facilitate and contribute to the delivery of a seamless integrated package of care tailored to the needs of the individual.

The post holder will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to support the implementation and delivery of evidence based care.

They will act as an expert resource and be a positive role model providing sound professional knowledge and leadership to all members of the multidisciplinary team within the maternity service. They will ensure the relevant guidelines and clinical pathways reflect current evidence ensuring care is of the highest quality.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team and other key personnel in primary and secondary care to provide a seamless supportive package of care tailored to the pregnant persons individual needs.

Work collaboratively with key stakeholders within West Yorkshire and Harrogate Local Maternity System to implement evidence based maternity care

Support mothers/parents to be active participants in identifying their health needs and work in partnership with mothers/parents to improve both their health and the health of their unborn child.

Work with the senior management team to develop innovative and collaborative approaches to implementing the national maternity strategy in relation to the specific area of focus.

Work closely with other specialist midwives to ensure a co-ordinated approach areas including: Perinatal Mental Health, Infant Feeding Team, Haamla etc.

Contribute to staff training, policy development and adherence, data collection, quality and audit. Delivering reports making recommendations for practice and quality improvements at CSU governance forums.

Review and develop information packages for service users.

Work collaboratively with Leeds Maternity Voices Partnership to evaluate service user feedback and disseminate trends and themes through shared learning platforms.

Support benchmarking of service delivery against national pathways, identify gaps and develop strategies for quality improvement.

Audit compliance with CSU guidelines and present findings at local audit meetings.

Support the development and implementation of patient focused safety improvement projects in order to demonstrably improve patient outcomes.

Use a variety of data sources such as key performance indicators, outputs from Morbidity and Mortality meetings, to identify any themes and trends that require further investigation and action.

Work collaboratively with the clinical educators and specialist teams to analyse data from incidents, audits, feedback and local regional and national guidance or publications and develop responsive action plans within the area of focus.

Develop innovative responsive strategies to disseminate shared learning from incidents using a range of platforms to meet the variable learning needs of the multidisciplinary team.

The post holder is expected to participate in clinical work as required and this may vary according to the requirements of projects and guidance in relation to specialist advice.

To keep up to date with clinical practice and to demonstrate and maintain commitment to continuing professional development (CPD). Undertake mandatory and priority training within the required time scales

Participate in own and others appraisals

Fulfil the requirements as directed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to maintain and revalidate registration

Actively promote and use the Leeds Improvement method to improve the quality and safety of the service

Work closely with Research and Innovation to promote research , disseminate outcomes and findings to support evidence based practice

Act in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies.

Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes.

Ensure compliance with the Information Governance policy and supporting guidance.

Responsibility for identifying, planning and managing the development and management of Midwives and Administrators within the team.

Undertake duties on other wards or departments as and when required by service demands or patient need.

11. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

i) PHYSICAL EFFORT

The post requires a combination of sitting, standing, and walking with some requirement for physical effort. When working in clinical areas there may be an occasional requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods during a shift.

ii) MENTAL EFFORT:

The post requires frequent amounts of concentration for reviewing data, accuracy and attention to detail is essential. The post holder will be frequently interrupted by urgent or non-urgent enquiries received verbally be telephone or email at any time.

iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT

The post will involve dealing with highly emotive situations on a daily basis. The post holder will convey highly sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance and handling potential conflict. There will be some direct liaison with families.

The post holder will be required to engage with a wide and diverse range of staff that may involve negativity and challenge, requiring a positive approach and an ability to respond to challenge.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Degree in Midwifery( or demonstrable evidence of comparable experience)
  • Evidence of continuing professional education and development.
  • Experience in all aspects of maternity care with a keen interest in the area of specialism specific to the midwifery post.
  • Able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills and competence in practice post registration qualification in speciality Qualification/course in leadership Masters Degree or can demonstrate that the


Desirable

  • Masters Degree or Working towards Masters level qualification.
  • Experience in the area of specialism specific to the midwifery post.


Experience

Essential

  • A keen interest and understanding of the area of specialism specific to the midwifery post.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing self and others and changing practice.
