You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high standards of individualised care for the people who use our services ,whilst maintaining their privacy and dignity at all time.

When working in the surgical Surgical Admissions Unit to help ensure a smooth running of the department and the timely arrival of patients to theatre. Liaising with the theatres and the multidisciplinary team on a daily basis to ensure good communication and patient outcomes

You will be expected to provide high quality and concise pre-assessment for elective surgical patients and to help ensure efficient and safe patient based care to patients on the day of surgery

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake nurse led pre-operative assessments
  • Provide health promotion advice and ensure that appropriate verbal and written information relating to their surgery is given
  • Adhere to NICE Guidelines for Pre-operative Assessment and Anaesthetics
  • Co-ordinate the Surgical Admissions Unit to ensure the smooth running of the department
  • Admit patients, ensuring they are prepared for and transited to theatre safely
  • Prepare notes in accordance with clinic guidelines and ensuring confidentiality is maintained at all times
  • Administer prescribed medication effectively and safely according to Trust requirements and in line with NMC guidelines
  • Organise own day to day work
  • Mentor student nurses and provide support for all learners in the department.
  • Be responsive to change and able to work in an environment which has constant interruptions
  • Support other members of the team acting as a role model at all times
  • On occasions take charge of an area in the absence of more senior staff
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff and relatives
  • Participate in surveys/research/audits
  • To report all sickness absence in accordance with Trust Policy

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered (Level 1) Adult Nursing


Desirable

  • Degree in nursing or on a pathway
  • Interest in or experience of specialist surgery: head and neck, ENT, vascular, gynaecology and maxilla facial surgery


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Previous surgical experience
  • Evidence of meeting PREP requirements
  • Knowledge of Clinical governance
  • Knowledge of individual responsibility to health and safety and clinical risk


Desirable

  • Previous pre-assessment experience
  • Awareness of the NHS plan and current initiatives that affect us particularly in the south west penninsular
