There is now the opportunity for a Band 5 registered nurse to join the Urology nursing team at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH).

The applicant will be required to participate in predominately the outpatient environment. They will be assisting in diagnostic and interventional procedures and therapies in addition to general outpatient consultation clinics.

We will provide a friendly and professional environment for them to work in. They will be supported by a dedicated and established multidisciplinary team and additional training will be provided as required to support them in the role.

The urology team comprises of committed and supportive Consultants, Nurse Specialists and other junior members. Working collaboratively we aim to ensure that our patients are supported and cared for to a standard that ensures excellent patient experience and clinical outcomes.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed individual with some urology/outpatient experience to join our team. Successful candidates will need to be motivated and possess strong organisational and interpersonal skills. They will be required to demonstrate professional attributes, including appropriate understanding of the current nursing and national agendas, and demonstrate the ability to work with some autonomy and effectively within the multidisciplinary team.

Duties will include:
  • To provide patient-centred nursing care, aiming to achieve the highest possible standards of care delivery and clinical outcomes, in accordance with the UH Sussex Nursing and Midwifery Strategy
  • Deputise in the absence of more senior nursing staff and undertake department management duties as required.
  • In conjunction with urology clinicians, clinical nurse specialists radiology colleagues and ward teams, contribute to the efficient running of urology therapeutic and diagnostic activities and all other urology outpatient and inpatient activities. To include the lithotripsy service, flexible cystoscopies, intravesical chemotherapies, urodynamic studies and other diagnostic interventions undertaken at the Princess Royal Hospital
  • Assist in the promotion of a conducive learning environment for all staff and students.

Job responsibilities

Communication
  • Uses advanced communication skills when listening and assessing patients in the clinical environment.
  • Works closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team to facilitate the continuity of care thereby enhancing the patient experience.
  • To act as the patient advocate by ensuring an understanding of consultation outcomes and choices.
  • To communicate sensitive information and provide psychological support for patients receiving sensitive/ bad news.
  • Ability to impart health education giving advice and support as necessary.
  • Handles complaints and plaudits in a professional manner and reports any incident to senior nursing staff.
  • Undertakes checking of clinical and personal data collection on multiple occasions daily.
  • Effectively liaises with ward staff, site management team, discharge lounge and other departments.
  • Liaises with the ambulance service regarding transfer between departments and/or home address.

Service Delivery and Improvement
  • Contributes to the departments philosophy for patient care on the concept that each individual is entitled to the highest standards of care to promote and maintain all aspects of physical, social, cultural and psychological well being.
  • Responsible for the efficient running of clinics coordinating clinical activity health records and results.
  • Promote the involvement of patients in their consultations and experiences within various settings.
  • Participate in departmental meetings.
  • Ensure the health, safety and welfare of colleagues and patients, taking action where necessary and report issues of concern to senior nursing staff.
  • To report all complaints, incidents and accidents to the senior nursing staff as soon as possible and document according to trust policy.
  • To be aware of security issues within the various departments and maintain security of self and others to the best of ability.
  • Ensure the optimum use of available resources thus assisting with the departmental budget/resources.
  • To take charge of clinical activity in the absence of senior staff.
  • Provide a role model for others to emulate, at all times exhibiting a high standard of professional dress and behaviour.
  • Able to work within a team but equally to have autonomy and able to work independently within identified areas of practice.
  • To actively contribute to adherence of infection control policies.
  • Act as an effective role model for junior staffs, leading by example and demonstrating the ability to communicate practical skills.
  • Demonstrates problem solving & analytical skills.
  • Ensures new medical staff are orientated and supported within the clinical areas.
