An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic senior staff nurse to join our friendly and progressive team in the Helena Specialist Nursing Team and Ryegate House.

The Helena Specialist Nursing Team provides continuing care packages to children and young people either in the family home or in education settings. Our team is made up of highly skilled nurses, nurse associates, assistant practitioners, support workers and administrative staff who together strive to provide gold standard personalised care to children and young people within the Sheffield area.

Ryegate House is a six bedded facility which provides short breaks with 24 hour nursing care for children and young people aged 0-19 years with complex neurological health conditions. Our primary purpose is to provide opportunities for children or young people with complex health need to spend time away from their primary carers. This includes day, evening, overnight or weekend respite.

You will be responsible for their professional development and are expected to deliver and maintain high standards of nursing care. You will need to demonstrate your leadership and shift management capabilities.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team are essential to the job. You will also be expected to have an understanding of professional and current issues in children's nursing.

A full orientation & training package will be offered.

Main duties of the job

  • To co-ordinate and provide skilled nursing care to patients, in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Act as an advocate for patients.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for an allocated patient group, in consideration of individual need, using prioritisation and delegation skills.
  • To assist the Ward Manager in managing and developing the service and team.
  • To work collaboratively within a Multidisciplinary team, internal and external to the organisation, to facilitate holistic seamless care delivery for all Trust Patients.
  • To give leadership to junior staff and manage the service and team in the absence of the ward manager.
  • To support the ward manager in his/her role and participate in managing the ward, staff and resources, to maintain standards within the clinical governance agenda.
  • To represent the ward manager at relevant meetings and forums.
  • To deputise for the ward manager when required and act as role model and leader to other junior staff.

Job responsibilities

  • To be registered as RSCN or RN (Child), and use this knowledge in the daily care of patients.
  • To have completed band 5 development packages and have significant post registration experience within paediatrics at minimum of Band 5.
  • To undertake administration of prescribed medication within the Trust policy for administration of medicines.
  • To be aware of the resources available for continuing education and demonstrate a positive attitude towards self-development.
  • Principles of Infection Control. It is essential that the post-holder adheres to all Trust infection control policies, procedures and protocols (to include hand decontamination, correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and care and management of patients with communicable infections.
  • To work within Trust Child Safeguarding Policies and undertake safeguarding training at Level 3.
  • Identify own personal and professional needs through the personal development review process, knowledge and skills framework & clinical supervision process and to work and achieve objectives set.
  • To ensure that personal mandatory and statutory training requirements are met in accordance with Sheffield Childrens NHS Foundation Trust policies, maintaining own professional profile.
  • Maintain competence in the use of all medical devices used within the department.
  • To be able to analyse and make decisions in relation to risk and patient care in complex cases.
  • To plan straightforward and complex tasks on an ongoing basis.
  • Utilise clinical and risk assessment skills to maintain a safe environment.
  • To review current practice and report to ward/departmental manager areas requiring change.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Degree or Diploma Level Education as Registered Nurse (RN Child, RNLD or RSCN)
  • Willingness to undertake speciality specific training
  • Teaching, Mentoring and Assessors qualification
  • Current registration with NMC


Desirable

  • Willingness to undertake study at degree level
  • Relevant Post Basic registration Course


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years staffing experience within paediatrics and evidence of competencies achieved
  • Mentoring experience with nursing students and one-to one teaching of junior staff
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to professional development


Desirable

  • Staffing experience within speciality
  • Relevant project work
  • Understanding of budgetary or resource management
  • Risk Assessment training
