An exciting opportunity has arisen for a newly qualified Speech and Language Therapists to join our Adult service on the beautiful Isle of Wight. The team consists of a range of supportive and experienced clinicians able to provide supervision and training, but you will also benefit from peer support by starting your entry into the profession together with another newly qualified SLT.

You will need to/have:
  • Relevant qualifications and current registration with H.C.P.C
  • Demonstrate high-level written and oral (including telephone) communication skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application of quality care and evidence based practice
  • Ability to work within the Values and Visions framework of the Isle of Wight NHS Trust
  • A strong desire to develop their skill base within a complex, specialist setting, working closely within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team and working adults and/ or children and young people with learning disabilities
  • A genuine wish to live on a Beautiful Island (generous relocation package available)


Main duties of the job

This role requires a flexible and innovative Speech & Language Therapist to work within a dedicated Adult SLT team working across inpatient stroke, Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team, outpatients, and patient's own homes. There may be opportunities to focus in specific clinical areas if this is preferable to the successful applicant, or to gain a broad spectrum of experience across clinical specialties.

This post has scope for further opportunities to professionally develop within the Speech & Language Therapy service in the future. You will be working as part of a friendly and supportive team who meet regularly, working with a wide-ranging caseload, across different clinical specialisms.

This position is suitable for newly qualified SLTs as their first post, but is also suitable for those with some experience.Our department has established systems for supporting professional and managerial supervision, mentoring, and is committed to supporting professional development.

We will ensure that you have access to regular CPD opportunities. Speech and Language Therapists are sited with their educational colleagues to enable continuity and coordinated support.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose To provide a speech and language therapy service to adults with communication and swallowing disorders To work in across a range of settings to include outpatient clinics, community visits, and inpatients. To work as a member of multi-professional teams in offering patients an effective and efficient evidence-based service. To participate in the provision of education and training to the multi-professional team and others regarding the management of communication disorders and dysphagia.

Job Statement To work as an independent practitioner with the support of senior Speech and Language Therapy colleagues in the provision of a Speech and Language Therapy service with a caseload of adult patients. These will include stroke, acute medicine, adults with learning difficulties, voice and progressive neurological conditions. To be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment/management and discharge of patients with communication disorders and dysphagia. You will use clinical reasoning skills, evidence based practice, and critical/reflective thinking in order to implement and evaluate these interventions. To facilitate members of the multi-professional team, other statutory and voluntary agencies, carers and patients to participate in achieving optimal outcomes.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Hold a recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent
  • Registered with Health and Care Professions Council
  • Registered with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists


Desirable

  • Successful completion of accredited post-basic dysphagia or comparable in-house training programme


Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of assessment tools relevant to an adult caseload
  • Awareness of the roles of other professionals
  • Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to adults
  • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions
  • Awareness of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of national record keeping standards
